toi toi toi

I hadn’t heard this before until yesterday when someone sent out a toi toi toi e-mail to the cast of the show one of my kids is in – what does it mean? I know it is something singers say similar to break a leg? But what does toi mean?

Tks.

Opera singers say toi toi toi before a performance. I’ve been told that it comes from Germany and that it means “good luck” or “cross your fingers”. I read somewhere that it may be a corruption of Teufel, German for the devil.

Thanks. I was wondering!
