When this first hit, I was 9 months pregnant and started tracking bathroom trips to see just how much TP I’d need (It’s when one of those calculator things came out.) because, frankly, I was bored.
But again I was 9 months pregnant and the amount of times I had to run to the bathroom was just depressing so I stopped counting before noon ?
Since someone mentioned the Charmin ad jingle, does anyone else find those animated commercials with the bear family creepy and awkward? Some of them are almost uncomfortable to watch!!
Had to stop by Safeway today for a prescription and noticed people coming out with TP. Oh good, I thought. Then saw others just inside the door with another type of TP. Great, variety.
When I got to the TP aisle, there were 2 different types, but only about 4 packages left. Total. I took one.
I was tidying a shelf in the basement today and found a shredded, gnawed roll of TP. Some little mouse is using The Preciouss to line its nest, apparently.
I found a store which has TP, paper towels and hand sanitizer available on Tuesday mornings. One each is allowed for purchase. I affectionately call it “Toilet Paper Tuesday’s.” I’m there bright and early at store opening every Tuesday. ?
If this link works, its a fabulous Rube Goldberg contraption with today’s toilet paper supply by a very bored “shelter in place” person. Its great!

I admit it. Long before this, I never liked to be low on toilet paper. I have always had at least a 2-3 week supply stored up. I’m trying not to hoard it now, but since it’s so rare to see any in the stores, I will buy a pack if it’s available. We have enough for about 2 months. I don’t like the mega rolls because they don’t fit on our dispensers well. But if that’s all I see now, I will get it for sure.
We go through a little over 1 jumbo roll (angel soft, 250 sheets per roll) per person per week. That would be 40-45 sheets per person. My kids don’t like to conserve - one in particular! And as much as I drink, I seem to be in there all the time.
TP usage has many variables. How many sheets are needed? Depends on single/double ply, # 1 or # 2 to begin with. I find the nice Charmin means far less needed than the typical store restroom provides. Many months ago I tried to figure things out to minimize costs. Then there is the number of sheets per standard roll. I find the more sheets per roll means less end of the roll issues (using the extra sheets that would not be successfully removed from the cardboard tube…). I found the Charmin Super Mega rolls were a tight fit on the holder that is half into a cabinet (or wall) while Mega works well. I also discovered the two types have different dimensions, believe it or not. The area is the same but one longer, the other wider. Go figure. So your two sheets for # 1 or 3 for # 2 (with multiples used) is comfortably the same.
The Green Bay, Wisconsin and other WI paper mills are still up and running. They are major suppliers as I understand it.
Definitely a first world problem, but we have that issue, too. Our house is older and has ceramic TP holders that are well affixed to the walls. Guess during that era, the TP rolls were lean because mega or jumbo type rolls just won’t physically fit on the spindle. If a shortage meant that all we could get would be larger rolls, of course we’d skip putting it on the holder, use what’s available and just lay the roll on the top of the toilet tank or within reach, but it does make normal shopping a bit more tricky. And messes with those calcs about how many rolls the average person needs.
However, even if you use twice as much of 1-ply Scott 1000 (1000 sheets per roll) as you would of 2-ply Charmin Ultra Soft Mega Roll (284 sheets per roll), the roll of Scott 1000 will last longer. (Scott 1000 is the largest number of sheets per roll that I have seen in common retail stores for household use.)
Would a person likely use only twice as much of the thinner, rougher Scott tissue? If it is anything like store rolls I would need a lot more than that. I grew up with yucky Scott TP and will never use it.
