We are remodeling our main floor powder room and want to change out the 20 year old traditional holder for something more modern. I like the look of the holders that are open ended and have like using them in hotels. I just don’t know how I would like it on a daily basis. Any thoughts or suggestion? Vertical or horizontal?
One of our bathrooms has an open end paper holder that’s horizontal. It’s on my to do list to change. It’s too easy to knock the roll off the rod.
I like the pivot style holders. The rod that holds the roll pivots up from a horizontal position for changing vs. the spring loaded tension rod type that seems more common. They come in all styles and metal finishes.
I’m just putting in a horizontal holder (Kohler.) I don’t like the vertical ones because the end of paper hangs down the side.
This is the one I’m getting but with a different finish.
Have horizontal ones and love them. Attach so that when tearing sheets off you are pulling towards the closed end.
I bought them originally because nobody around here would put a new roll on and it was always me fiddling with the roller things. I swear kids would rather do without than replace the empty TP roll…
The Kohler one in post 2 is just straight across–mine have a upward curve at the open end which helps keep the roll on.
Similar to mine is “Preston wall-mounted” by Moen.
This is what we put in our bathroom when we recently remodeled. The arm pivots up to replace a tissue roll. It’s very easy to use, and secure.

Here are Delta’s other models, some open ended:

I saw those pivot ones online and wasn’t quite sure how they worked. I love the idea!
The pivot ones are fantastic. Make sure you have the proper bracing behind the wall behind the paper holder. The one originally installed in our powder room failed and pulled loose because one of the support ends was not in wood.
I just checked-- it pivots up just a hair shy of 90º. In the closed position the arm rests on a small extension of the side piece; it doesn’t click shut-- it just lies there. So it would never become hard for a weaker or older person to lift it.
We have this one. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Gatco-Latitude-II-Single-Post-Toilet-Paper-Holder-in-Chrome-4243/202245066?MERCH=REC--PIPHorizontal1_rr--100674290--202245066--N It doesn’t have quite enough of a bump at the end, so sometimes we knock the roll off, but mostly I’m happy with it.
I put in an open horizontal holder when I remodeled my main bath a number of years ago. I loved the sleek, elegant look but I replaced it with a closed one after just a few months. They probably work fine if the design and position of the holder is exactly right but that wasn’t the case with mine.

Mine is similar to this. I have no problem keeping the roll on. I have the old fashioned spring ones in my kids bathrooms and I dislike them.
