Another vote for Toto. We also have toilet I would not recommend that has a pull up flusher on the back that pulls up like a stem. It is a low volume toilet and really does not flush enough so frequently has problems. I can’t remember the brand, it is pretty, but I would never chose it again.

Toto too =)))). The builder’s toilets failed right away and he replaced them with Kohler which also clogged frequently. We finally went to the plumbing supply house and asked for the best possible toilet. I have to say, after two rounds of failing toilets, I am so grateful to have Totos! We have the ones where the toilet seat slowly lowers, too. No slamming. It’s about the most luxurious thing in my house, lol!

Yes we have those nice seats too!

So happy to see this thread. The third child is leaving the nest and it’s time to refurbish as they’ve soiled it beyond redemption after 18 years of sharing a bathroom. Thank you, CC community, for understanding no problem is too small or too unseemly. I’m off to see the Totos.

So, who sells this Toto toilet? Is it at major chains?

Several years ago, we stopped in Tokyo for a weekend on our way home from a family trip to SE Asia. Sadly, I could not get Mr. NeuroticParent to leave our hotel because he was so obsessed with the Toto in our room. He tried to buy one there, but found out online that he could order it from our local appliance distributor.

We ended up with the Washlet E200 (technically just a toilet seat that we fitted onto our existing toilet), with remote control, air purifier, massaging/oscillating front and rear automatic warm-water “wand” with 3-temperature setting, jet dryer and heated SoftClose seat (to eliminate annoying toilet-seat “slam”).

I’m sure that by now there must be an upgraded model available, but we’ve got two tuitions to pay!

Toto wins easily. I am surprised to see toilet clogging is so common. We never had that problem. I assumed in picking out a toilet, dimension and look were the only thing that mattered.

Which brand has 1 GPF?

I know Kohler San Rafael one-piece toilet has 1 GPF. We have them. We never had any trouble with them. We got them for the look and size. We are in an old house with smallish bathrooms.

MommaJ, thank you so much for that website! It turns out that Terry lives just a few miles south from our place, and we picked up our beautiful Toto Aquia dual-fluch toilet from his shop. What a great service and what a great product! Although we do not have toilet seat slammers in our house, we went with the soft-close seat.
Holy cow, Walmart now sells Toto?

This is a timely thread for me! We will be replacing our toilets in our upcoming remodel.

Do you recommend the one piece or 2 piece toilets? I’ve never owned a one piece.

Thanks for all the toto recs!

I don’t even know what you mean by one piece or 2 pieces. Ours have 2 flushes and soft close. They are also taller than some toilets. I love that.

There are two types–an all in one tank and bowl and one where the tank and the bowl are separate pieces. I don’t know if the differences are just in looks or also in function–if function differs, I’m wondering which type is the better performer.

Just ordered a Kohler Trisham for our new powder room yesterday. Never considered a Toto. Well, we have two more bathrooms to do upstairs, so we’ll see.

If only there were vacuum cleaners that worked as well as you all think the Toto toilet does.

The Dyson!

Introducing the Dyson toilet

Haha - Watch out, Toto!

We love our Toto one piece. We are getting another one this spring to replace the 3.5 gallon flush Gerber that S manages to clog on a regular basis. He also clogs the Toto, but but only rarely. I think it’s because he uses too much tp but of course this is not a discussion he is willing to have with me!!

The toilet of choice depends on the price you are willing to pay. The Walmart Toto referenced goes for $350 and much higher- a huge expense when multiplied by 3. Around $200 will get you the Kohler Highliner 1.28 gal flush at Home Depot or Lowes. We got the chair height model recently- easier to get up when we age ungracefully. Fast although noisy flush (better than a longer less noisy one, noise comes and goes before you realize what it is), works well- so much better than the old mega gallon/time to refill old ones we replaced (redoing a lot in our 25 year old house bought last spring). The Kohler website has info on toilets- many variables and prices. Even have to consider where you want the handle- front or side.

At this point in time I have learned far too much about what goes into a house. Thank goodness for the internet and getting the best prices by timing and shopping around. But so much research involved. Yet another heap of knowledge I may never need again.

My tall DH and the every growing DS went to Lowe’s about 8 months ago and came home with a mammoth low-flow toilet. I hate it! Not only must you be 5 foot 9 to be seated comfortably (TMI, but my feet barely touch the ground) but the toilet has developed an unfortunate problem – it stinks. Literally!

And yes, I do clean it, but a day or two afterward it’s stinking again. It’s something about the design of the toilet lid. I’ve questioned the menfolk at length about their habits and they swear nothing has changed in that area. We rarely use bleach as we’re on a septic but I must’ve used a gallon since they brought home this lemon.

It’s so bad that DH now agrees there’s something wrong with it. I’m choosing the next one.
