The CC community has an answer to most things. Anyone want to give their recommendation for a powder bath toilet replacement? We have a kohler one piece and not really satisfied with it. Looking for good flush and as heavy duty and quiet as possible. Thanks!

Also has anyone heard of the mirabelle line? Any good?

I haven’t heard of the Mirabelle line; we have Toto dual-flush throughout our house. Work great, not noisy at all.

Toto! We had a remodeler put in a cheap toilet, and my son kept clogging it up, Toto solved that problem.

Consumer Reports does have toilet tests (including ratings based on your criteria and water consumption), so check the back issues in the library or buy the on-line access to see the results.

A ton of info here:

Just got two new ones not too long ago. Watch out for the American Standard clean high efficiency toilet. I loved the idea and in one of the bathroom’s it is great. However it sits close to the wall and depending where your water line is, it may not fit. We had to return it and get a different kind for the other bathroom.

How old is your kohler one piece? We have an old (10 years) kohler one piece, Portrait model, which is just okay but we just built a summer home and put in the new kohler one piece Devonshire and its great! They changed the flushing mechanism and it is much better and not too loud. It never clogged last summer and we had a lot of company.

I have nothing to add but love this community of posters that can answer everything from what kind of toilet to buy, to warnings about computer viruses, what the best bras are, when to get a colonoscopy, how to love the kid on the couch, how to fill out a FAFSA and how to edit an essay to get into Harvard.

Thank you everyone for your feedback. The Toto looks great so I’m going to talk to my H about the “Drake” model. MommaJ – I looked at some of the videos on that site and I could not believe 24 golfballs flushed down! For the most part Toto seems to get the highest ratings and kohler not very good reviews. Seiclan – my kohler is about 15 years old but has always given me problems. I did see the Devonshire so I’ll check out that as well.

My cheaper toilets have been fine with occasional repairs but since this is the powder room I am trying to have something that looks nicer than the standard. That was why we originally got this topline kohler but looks don’t always equal performance… I’m tired of repeated flushings and plunging!!!

Toto is the word. I replaced all three toilets in the house. Drake toilet, the cheapest model, is on sale now. My contractors all recommend this brand.

Don’t know where you live or much about Toto. BUT be careful of putting in “electric” power flush toilets (if this is one). When the electric is out you are truly up the the proverbial creek without a paddle. Would never have one where hurricanes/storms are the norm.

If you want to use the position that much of the world uses, but with proper flushing, you can consider this:

We have 2 Toto Drakes, and a higher end Toto in the master bath. Most importantly, they work great and got rid of any clogging issues.

When installing, they fit a little different than old toilets so measure and make sure you get the right size based on the distance from the wall. They also need an above-floor-level drain so you may need an extra flange installed between the floor and the toilet.

We got $50 rebate on each from our water district based on the low-flow technology.

Toto for certain. We had a powder bath that was always problematic. Put in a toto and no issues…

Another vote for Toto. We have all Toto here and have the extra powerful flushing ones in the highest traffic bathrooms. Haven’t noticed any problems during power outages.

Toto–we replaced all three in the house. Two levels of flushes. Never a problem with anything being plugged ever.

Nothing like a rousing talk about toilets in the Cafe!

We love our Kohler memoirs toilet. We had it installed in October and have had no clogs. Love it.

Toto Drake for us, too. We replaced all of our toilets with Totos after we had an overflow with our builder grade one. I highly recommend the Toto.

I should have said we replaced two and added a third with an addition. I spent a lot of time with a woman who calls herself the “toilet queen” and felt I’d checked all of the options. The Toto saves water in the long term. Our plumber thought it was pricey, but did say, “You could flush a chicken down this thing.” We don’t flush chickens, but…
