Told registered to late for class-no financial aid for one class

I was registered for 10 credit hours when school started on 8/25/2014. I was advised that my chemistry course would need me to have a strong grasp of algebra. I dropped the four credit chemistry course (that started in October) and picked up the algebra course same day. this was two weeks after algebra started.
Fast forward a month later and I view my student account and it showed a balance. I went to My financial aid office and an adviser stated that the financial aid would not cover the algebra class because I registered late and I was coded as a half time not three quarter time student. I don’t understand how that can be- if I dropped the chemistry and picked up algebra in one transaction, and if financial aid is taking a snapshot of how many classes you are in at any given time. It would have shown I was always registered for ten credits, not six. This is stressful, I was expecting a refund now I owe. I was given notice of layoff on 9/7/14 and laid off on 09/12/2014 , now I owe money that I don’t have.

This seems to be an issue you are going to have to further investigate with your school. They may have specific add/drop dates to where a course you add late may not be counted towards your registration. You are going to want to verify your enrollment with the Registrar’s office (and go over add/drop dates) and then follow up with Financial Aid. If you are physically registered for 10 units, the aid should be adjusted to reflect this.

You need to talk to the Registrar about it. If you are going to get full credit for the algebra course according to the Registrar, and you did make up the missed work to the professor’s satisfaction, the FA office should concur with the Registrar and fix your status.

You might want to include the Dean of Students if you have to, if the Registrar can’t help you right away. Your job situation of course makes it more difficult.

(I do know that posting a drop and posting an add are different at my school - it’s not the same transaction even if they are directly related as in your case. But the short of it is, they DID allow you to take the algebra course as if you took it from day one, as a full credit course. So the FA should match what the Registrar thinks.)

If you had registered for 10 credits and dropped 4 and picked up 3 that leaves you 9…which may make you part time?
Did you drop chemistry during the “drop add period” of your school?

no my algebra course is also four credits. chemistry does not start till 10-20-2014 ( a 8 week class)
