Another HOF musician has passed away.
Oh wow, too young.
What a heartbreaker
It was cardiac arrest.
Heartbreaking
So sad
Not a huge fan but admired his attitude regarding record companies. Liked his song ‘Free Falling.’ And somehow, he got me to appreciate and enjoy "Rebels.’
Tom Petty, Monty Hall and Hugh Heffner all in the same week. All were icons to one extent or another in American culture.
He just did a concert tour a couple of months ago.
Sorry I didn’t go see it !
One more bad news and I’m going to go hide under my bed
Oh man - I’m not a big Tom Petty fan but I love love love “american girl.”
Very sad. Too young.
Not Tom Petty!!!
I haven’t purchased a Tom Petty concert ticket or album since 1979, but I’m really sad about this.
In the summer of 1978, I was living in an 8-person multi-generational group house in Oak Bluffs. It was multi-generational in the sense that five of us had just graduated (or almost graduated) from college, and the other three were rising sophomores. We had horrible fights about music – the oldsters liked the branch of punk that was quickly becoming New Wave (and the efforts by legacy artists to scuff up their style under the influence of punk), while the younger ones were still in the thrall of English prog. Until one weekend the ringleader of the youngsters went to Boston and wound up at a show at the Paradise by a group she hadn’t heard of before. She returned to Martha’s Vineyard with autographed copies of the first two Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers records, and we all had a new favorite musician.
Just saw him perform at the Greek Theater on the UC Berkeley campus a month or two ago. He will be missed.
I keep finding conflicting reports about whether or not Tom Petty has actually died. Some sources are saying he is still on life support.
Yes, I’ve heard that too. He was found in full cardiac arrest and is on life support. The report of his death, on a tweet, has been erased.
Of course, it was the same with Carrie Fisher and she did not recover.
@Nrdsb4 They have removed life support and death is imminent from the sources I have read.
Yes, just the fact of being on “life support” carries with it a pretty grim prognosis.
@jshain We used to be able to see concerts there from the roof of our dorm - as long as we knew the guys who had the room with the window that opened onto the roof.
I didn’t know until a few years ago when I saw it up close that removing life support doesn’t necessarily lead to rapid death.
I hope for his loves ones sake that this doesn’t drag on… whatever the ultimate outcome.
