Tone of essay question

I’m not necessarily talking about death, overcoming cancer type of tone per se, but i know i’ve read in some places that your college essays shoud be positive.

My essay is about overcoming an internal struggle/ conflict, how i overcame it and how it has changed who i am. A good portion of it, i talk about how frustrated, defeated, etc. i feel. is this okay? or do colleges like more positive ones?

Your essay sounds fine.

I think what you want to avoid is melodrama or what might come across as cliched teenage angst. Some of the best writing in the world deal with overcoming obstacles and there’s no reason to shy away from it if it’s an accurate reflection of who you are. No need to be pretend-sunny all the time.

i see…anyone willing to read it and actually get back to me? (2009 HS grads and older)

I can give feedback, PM me!
