I am wondering how flexible BU is in accepting credits from other schools, especially to cover BU requirements. Have other transfers found the school to be flexible especially if the course does not exactly match the BU course, but does cover many of the same topics. Also, how does BU treat a 3 credit stats class when 4 credits are the standard. Will they accept the course at 3 credits (for example give one 3 credits, but allow it to satisfy a requirement.)

Daughter is considering transferring from a top 20 school for January admission. Will housing be provided.

Also, it seems that BU requires you to apply to a certain college. Is it possible to apply to say the liberal arts program and to later transfer to communication or to education. My daughter is not yet sure what she wants to study and cannot explore several options as they are not offered at her current college.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks so much!

Is it possible to exempt out of the writing requirement with high AP English scores?

each college has its own transfer credit standards. however, the bu website says “The basic unit of credit at Boston University is the semester hour. A typical, full-time course load is 16 hours per semester—usually four courses of four semester hours each. For transferable courses on a semester-credit-hour system, you’ll receive an equal number of semester hours. For courses on a quarter-credit-hour system, you’ll get two-thirds of the total number of quarter-hours. In most cases, the admitting school or college issues the final evaluation.”

i am not sure about the housing but i know that if a student is not happy in the school that they have chosen, they are allowed to transfer to another school if they wish. be aware that each school has its own requirements so what was taken in one school may or may not apply to the degree requirements of another.

in regards to getting out of the writing requirement with a high AP English score, the answer is most likely no. here is a link to the AP credit that BU will give. the 2 writing classes your daughter will have to take are WR100 and WR150.

In regards to transfer credit, I’ve found that the lower level the class, the easier it is to transfer credit. Usually these are the 100 level classes. I’ve taken a lot of external credits for 100 level credits (usually for the CAS gen. ed. requirements) and they’ve taken most any intro level course credit. Beyond that it is more difficult to say, it honestly depends on the department.

From my experience, for a three credit course in another college, you will likely get three credits from BU. Its not that big a deal because you still fulfill the requirement for that class and the grades you get from the other school are excluded either way.

You cannot be exempt from the writing requirements (WR100/150).

For intra-university transfers between colleges, you’ll need to take the required transfer course(s) but otherwise its pretty easy to swap.

Thank you both for your responses!!!

GladKen-- Did you transfer to BU from another school?

Nono. I just took/take a lot of college classes during summer in my state school, so I’m pretty familiar with transferring credits around.

I have transfer credits from taking classes at a state university during high school. They were lower division, I had to petition with the college with that major (gave them a syllabus and transcript, I believe). I had 3 credits accepted as 3 credits in BU, fulfilling requirements, and they were accepted by the college of arts and sciences psychology department.

About colleges: the only thing I wouldn’t choose is CGS (undecided, college of general studies) as it is known for being notorious in not letting students transfer out into another college even after deciding a major.

Not sure about english requirements, but though I got a 4 and a 5 on two AP Eng, I had to take a year of English. But I am also pre-med, so I don’t know if that was for BU or for possible med schools later.
