Too much?

Im going to be a comp sci major at UMD but i want to add economics to make it a double major. However, i am also in the honors ACES program which requires about 15-20 credits extra. Will taking all this on be too hard and stressful? or should i just stick to CS and the honors program?

I’m not sure if anyone can really answer your question. ACES is a relatively new program at UMD. And if you do well in CS, you’ll have great job opportunities. This may be something to discuss with the advisers at orientation…

Just my opinion, but I think that is a lot to take on, especially when you have not yet experienced college. And a CS degree will guarantee some good job opportunities; I’m not sure the Econ doiuble will make that much diffeence. Maybe CS minor?

Agree with SoofDad, but Maryland tends to be pretty flexible and accommodating. They want students to participate as fully as possible and you will find that it may not necessarily be 15-20 “extra” credits since many of the courses you take also count to fulfill requirements either for gen ed classes or electives within your major.

@Prodigee You should add up the number of credits those programs will require. I believe that Econ requires around 40 credits, while the number of CS credits depends on what you’re exempt from. It looks like it would be somewhere from 50-60 credits for most people. With ACES, you’re at 105-120 credits (you need a little over 120 to graduate). This is probably too busy of a schedule, because you’ll still need space for the General Ed requirements that you haven’t fulfilled with your majors. However, if you’re exempt from some beginning CS courses, it might be doable.

You’ll be absolutely fine doing both. Worst case, you have about two years to make changes without setting yourself back.
