Too Risky ? ( help lead the blind, aka me.)

I want to write about how I moved to America on 9.11 as a 10 year old from Denmark (had to land in Canada and take a bus to Virginia, where we lived for a year and at this strange time not knowing one word of English), as an immigrant in such strenuous times built my character to who i am today and why i want to help people understand one another. – This being said, I am also half Iranian/Azeri. - half my family living there, and having dual citizen ship between Denmark and Iran. (having been there multiple times - Iran I mean) - most recently a month ago actually…
Is this too close to a sob story? I don’t want it to be a sob story, I want it to be an explanation of me as a person.

I have plenty of other intriguing experiences I could write about. I am unsure though, of which one seem the most appealing to a high ranked school ( I am a sophmore at a CC in Illinois , will have my associates after 3 semesters , in the honors program with a focus on Language --German, and Arabic-- ) I want to go into pre-med. I just want to help people, in an intellectual or physical way.

Here are other ideas to write about

 • Was an ICT/English volunteer teacher through Worldteach in Namibia for three months ( was the youngest volunteer, and program is funded through Harvard)

Travels between Denmark and Iran - cultural clashes and clashes at home…

Working as a Language Camp Counselor at Concordia teaching Danish. (age 19)

Volunteering at a Music Companion for Hospice Patients.

Someone please provide any sort of feedback on any of these ideas.

P.S. – Im obviously not physically blind. but help a girl out.

THANKS !!

Frankly, I absolutely LOVE the topic of how you moved on 9/11 and how it changed you. It is unique topic that I think would highlight you very well. I wouldn’t call it a sob story at all. Good luck!

I think this would be an incredibly unique essay, honestly I’d love to read it! It wouldn’t be a sob story at all, you could talk about how arriving to the US during such a rough time shaped your opinions on global matters, etc etc. I imagine that experience really helped to shape you as a person, so focus on how you grew and what your thoughts were about the situation and how you feel about it today. Don’t write about “oh, it was so tough and so scary!” because THAT would be a sob story!

Good luck!

That sounds like an awesome topic.

ahh good, that is such a relief !
I am applying to
BU, UCB, UCLA, NYU, UIUC
I am unsure if these schools are out of my reach.

Simply amazing. Write about it – it’s incredibly unique and will show the adcoms “exactly” who you are!
