Too Risky?

I’m thinking about writing an essay about dating and relationships for my CalTech essay about how I am a scientist or engineer.

Is this type of topic too risky? It seems to be completely ironic that scientific intuition would be linked to dating and relationships, as they’re complete opposites.

I have a lot to write on this topic and think that I can write an interesting essay. However, it can come off in two different ways:
1.) I’m applying to a technical school, and when asked to focus on the most technical aspects of my life, the best I can mention is actually about dating and relationships.
2.) I am so technical that even the small things are technically analyzed and turned into sciences.

Good idea, or should I probably choose something less eccentric?

Your topic may be okay, but you need to focus less on your personal (mushy) experiences with dating and more on the technical side of it. Don’t make it a “Hallmark Card” essay in which you endear your girl/boyfriend. If you truly are an eccentric person, it will blend in with your application. Don’t pick a wild topic if you are not a wild person; the AC will know that you were just trying to garner their attention with an eccentric essay. If you are more of the “traditional” or “vanilla” type, I wouldn’t recommend trying to contrast your personality with an already slightly “risky” essay.

i love this idea! i’d recommend that you only use it if you are confident in your writing skills, though. i don’t think you need to sound “wild” at all… a light-hearted, ironic tone would work well.
