I’m a senior in high school

Basically i got two B’s in poli sci and art history and if I’m planning to transfer, will it factor into my overall GPA if i’m planning to take it at the same college?

Also I got a F in math lab Algebra (long story short dad signed me up for a class i didn’t even want to go to) and it’s a one unit course will this affect it too if I’m planning to transfer?

I want to keep my grades high, so maybe I should go for another community college then so that they won’t show up. Good or bad?

don’t gotta read this or answer, just need first question XD but…

Also on another note, i got accepted to UC riverside but the problem is I don’t have financial aid and it’s gonna cost me $24000 =/ Do you think it’s still a good idea to go than a community college?

yes these grades will stay on your perm record. i took two classes in hs as well and it stayed. you can get an academic renewal at some CC’s. ask you counselor about them. they basically are just cover ups for your bad grade. so UCs wll see a Z instead of a F. but they will know its a academic renewal. you can only get these if the grade u got was over 2 years ago i think.

if you are really concerned you can always go to another CC, but regardless…when you apply to a UC or something, they will want to see what other colleges you attended and they will know. so its better to probably explain to them that it was in highschool etc etc.

as for your 2nd question, i say dont go. why? because im biased. UCR is a ****ty school. ive never heard anything good about it aside from it being a 2nd/3rd/4th/5th/6th/7th… choice college. go to a CC and save yourself and your parents 48,000 dollars. then transfer to UC of your choice after getting strong grades/EC’s.

unless UCR is your 1st choice, dont waste your time going to a school you will spend 24k a year and be stuck at. transferring from UC to UC is more difficult.

^How are you biased if you haven’t even been to the school or even gone to take classes there? Just because it’s usually a 3rd/4th/5th choice school doesn’t make it a bad choice. Tons of people out there make it their first choice. It’s not a sh**ty college at all. It’s just as competitive as any other school in the UC system, or in California. There’s a bunch of research opportunities and campus groups that help out and support you no matter what your major is.

To the OP, if you’re interested, check it out. It’s a nice campus and the people are cool. It’s not one of the top UC’s, but the education is just as good. Try to get an even view on the choices. If not, then you save money. Check it out and see if you like it there! Ask students and email some professors. Talk to your advisor, see what they think! It might be worth the money after all after you research it more.

that was my opinion/impression i received from students who are attending and who have graduated from UCR.

I will bash on UCR all day because ive heard nothing positive from it. why waste your time going if youre heart is elsewhere? I honestly feel disappointed when many of my friends went to UCR for the wrong reasons through peer pressure and cultural expectations.

I will probably sound like a complete jackass and jerk, but if you are going to invest 2+ years into your life at a CC make the best of it and go to a top school. UCR is not the best choice.

@forensicanthro - respectively speaking, perhaps you can enlighten me/us on what UCR has over other UC’s?

TO OP, he/she in the end, is right. visit the campus and see for yourself. ultimately it is your choice.

yeah I agree. I’m going to go to CCSF or something then. I did visit the campus, it was surprisingly nice contrary to all the bad opinions out there, but still, the money sets me aback. So probably not going.

Thanks for answering my question

my problem with UCR is that first of all it’s in Riverside. A boring, residential city with god awful heat and at least an hour from LA. 2nd, I think something like 70% of the students there live off campus, or commute and a lot of them go home on the weeked. If your looking for a real college experience in a real college town then riverside is not right for you. It will be dead on the weekends, and there will not be much school spirit. College is about the atmosphere and experience, do you ever hear of people turning down UCLA/CAL for UCR ? no. I have heard many cases of people rejecting higher ranked schools going to UCSC/UCSB/UCD because it fit their personality. If you are just looking for an education, and you are one of those commuters than yes riverside will provide that. and yes, no matter what people say, statistically, riverside is full of rejects of the UC system.

Now you might say, UCI/UCSB/UCD/UCSD are rejects of UCLA/UCB but the problem is that people are realistic when it comes to cal and ucla, and the mid UC’s are still highly regarded. A lot of them are peoples first choices with regards to their own standards. It is kind of sad a top 100 school is considered a joke around here because most kids in other states would kill to go to a top 100 school… I used to live in PA and most of my old friends are going to random tier 3 public schools I never knew existed.
