How do you refurbish a shower? A bathtub?

"No, that was only so she didn’t have to convince her husband to declutter. "

:)

refinishing a bathtub or shower…

I refinished the bathtub in our second house (we’re on number 11) and it still looked great four years later when we sold. And yes, I used it quite often.

Nice dmd77…glad to read that… You seem to move a lot…:)

dmd77 – did the tub look like it was painted, or did it look like that was the way it was made? Also, could you share how much it cost to do that?

The things I’d seen advertised before looked like they stuck a plastic surround around stuff, so you end up with a cheap (IMO) looking plastic bath, but this doesn’t (from the pictures) look bad at all.

Well, in my area lots and lots of things are teardowns, because builders want to build big, new McMansions.

Ours is not a teardown because our land is kinda crummy – half of it is wetland, so one could not build a bigger house, nor could one move where the house is currently situated on the property. The house itself is a nice house. I just thought it was prudent to check out that eventuality before starting to spiff up.

Two bathrooms need painting, but not so much anything else. I am spending about half an hour a weekend using a Mr. Clean eraser to remove scuff marks from my walls. Those things really work well – but they are pricey.

Only two bathrooms need painting…that’s nice…

I will keep in mind the Mr.Clean…

I have found that getting at least 3 estimates for everything is important…

The difference in painting…for pretty much the same thing ranges from $16,000 to $30,000…

I don’t know for sure…but it looks like replacing carpet is going to range from $7,000 to $13,000…

These are not small differences…

Admittedly…the higher prices are quotes from a guy who deals in a very high end market…

My house is very nice…but it isn’t high end…like some…it’s not a McMansion…it isn’t a real mansion…:)

The difference in these quotes means i can be more aggressive with pricing the house when I try to sell…

Now…hopefully the hardwood floors will be priced right …:)

An interior paint job for $30k? Where do I sign up??? I should invoice my DH for all the painting I’ve done around here!! :)

dstark are you in the Bay Area? If so I can recommend a hardwood floor guy.

Yes I am…but I think I have a good guy…

If I don’t, I will PM you…

Thanks

CountingDown :)…that is inside and outside…and that is a bloated price…

Somebody quoted $16,000 for the same work…

The bathtub looked like it had been made that color; they did a great job. It was an acrylic tub, weird yellow, if you can imagine–we painted it a deep red (to match some tile). Cost (late 80s) was $400. Way cheaper than removing and replacing the tub (which was a fancy whirlpool).

I’d love to have the guts to redo a bathtub in deep red…

We had the front door of our first house spray painted (professionally) a beautiful red enamel. The house had dark brown rustic wood siding, and a wooden roof, with a giant blue spruce in the front yard. That front door really made the entry way pop in a great fashion. (Getting rid of the yellow crinkle glass that had been next to the door was a big help too.) Too much red would have looked bad, but this was a great focal point for the front of our house. I could see a red bathtub doing the same thing. (I’d just be worried that it would show every last bit soap and mineral residue.)

I bet that front door looked very good…

ok…i received good news and bad news yesterday…

My hardwood floors and carpet installations are going to come in at a price less than I thought…

I was quoted about 25,000…and now I received a quote of 15,000…

so i am happy with that…

The bad news…I had to rip up the ceiling of my family room because I had a leak on the overhead deck…and I see some black spots…on the wood after I ripped up the drywall…I think that is going to cost me…plus I have to put in new insulation and drywall…now…a little bit of a bummer…

Ouch. But if there is only a few spots, I’d hope that they can treat those pretty easily.

$16k still seems like a lot to me, but I’ve never gotten a quote. I’ve painted every room in the house except the MBR, though. That’s on the list one we figure out what else we are doing with the room and I get all the old clothes hanging around donated…

$16,000 is a good quote…I am really happy with that quote…It is inside and outside…there is a little additional work…so maybe it is $15,000 when I take that out…

The quote I received were $30,000+ , $18,000 and $16,000…

Countingdown…you are worth a lot of money to your husband…:)

dstark, you make it sound like it’s her husband’s money. Perhaps I mis-read your comment. Can you explain what you meant? Thanks.
