So I have a question. In my high school top 10% (40 people) are pretty athletic and well round, and out of top 10 best students, maybe 2-3 don’t do any sports, other 7-8 are athletes. Girl that ranked 1st is captain of soccer team, another girl (9th) is 2nd best wrestler in CA and so on.
What about colleges? How does top 1% (in my college it’s about 40 students) look like? Are they all overachieving nerds or there are some well-rounded guys/girls?
P.S.: by well-rounded I mean person who has social life, maybe does some IM sports, party and so on

I’m sure you can find examples of both. What’s the ratio would highly depend on the school.

It may just be my perception, but I think at many top schools, more than 1% will have a 4.0 gpa.

yeah you can’t exactly determine a top 1% at a university considering the various kinds of colleges, degrees, etc. Top 1% in each disciplined/major perhaps?..but finding such stats would be pointless --GPA/academic performance has far less meaning in college than in HS.

what those HS top ten students have in common -as you made apparent: competitive, hard working, and disciplined and consistent study habits.

now to answer your question: What about colleges? well…competitive, hard working, and disciplined and consistent study habits.

Competitive, hard work in sports among HS students usually correlates to a similar approach to their academic endeavors. It’s no coincidence 7-8 of those top 10 are team captains, state champions, etc, and happen to be top students.

many HS atheletes don’t go on to college sports…but they typically continue with their competitiveness and work habits

Lets say top1% of entire college, 40 students with the highest GPA in college over all, w/o deviding by majors, who are they? I am in class of 2010 and I just would like to see those who will be at the top of my class when I’ll be a senior

Well, it’s meaningless because some majors are going to have more grade inflation than others.

I guess it depends on where you go.

My guess is the profile from West Point is going to be a lot different than from Oberlin.

a girl is the 2nd best wrestler in california?

Wow

that is so cool!!

Is Title IX great or what!!!

a girl is the 2nd best wrestler in california?
2nd best wrestler between girls

i bet she’s REALLY ugly

How naive.

skooliscool – obviously, you don’t know wrestlers.

i find both LFWB dad and Skoolis’s post rather funny because skooliscool is assuming shes ugly because shes a wrestler or whatever and then dad is saying that “obviously” since she is a wrestler she isnt ugly… anyways it just struck me as kinda funny

No,

Wrestlers just know its what is inside that counts – not what they look like.

no i know i know, just the way it sounded when i read just was alittle contradictary

You will have no idea who the top 1% are … and noone will care who the top 1% are … and that is very good thing!

oh and at our school they give an award each year to 2-3 ppl who had the highest gpas/academic credentials.

i was top of my freshman class in college. trust me i didnt study all the time at all. i def went to parties and out on the weekends and all. i joined some club but didnt do any sports. i find myself just a normal college kid not a genious by any means just willing to study and all when necessary. and i went to honors conferences and got to know my professors.
