We went on a visit to Yale today and now I see what all the hoopla is about. It is just an amazing place!

jak321,

The Argonne lab belongs to the US but managed by a LLC composed of UChicago and Jacobs Engineering; if “part of” means ownership, then it’s not really part of UChicago. It’s like your building manager if you rent an apartment; he’s not the landlord and you don’t write him checks.

Also, Fermi/Argonne have extensive collaborations with other industry groups and universities such as UIUC, Illinois Institute of Technology, and Northwestern; UChicago doesn’t have monopoly in the collaborations.

So does that mean the Mild cats can increase their Nobel count, Sam?

lol… No.

The mild cats! Priceless.

1) Harvard
2) Yale
3) Princeton
4) Stanford
5) MIT
6) Wharton
7) Caltech
8) Columbia
9) UChicago
10) Non-Wharton Penn
11) Brown
12) Dartmouth
13) Duke
14) Cornell
15) JHU
16) Northwestern

Yes, I put 16 because I effectively split up Upenn into Wharton and the rest of the school.

What about Cambridge, Oxford, LSE, and schools outside the U.S.?

“What about Cambridge, Oxford, LSE, and schools outside the U.S.?”

Some of them are listed here along with the real top 15 most prestigious colleges in the world:

[Top universities by reputation 2013 - Times Higher Education](World Reputation Rankings 2013 | Times Higher Education (THE))

:-)

^LOL!!

Times reputation rankings is flagrantly inaccurate. It has Berkeley above Yale, Princeton and Stanford, among other laughable inaccuracies.

Here’s another one:
[Academic Ranking of World Universities - 2012| Top 500 universities | Shanghai Ranking - 2012 | World University Ranking - 2012](http://www.shanghairanking.com/ARWU2012.html)

Lol, don’t even get me started on ARWU!

Honestly I don’t think any of the world rankings are accurate. It’s too hard to objectively rate universities across different countries and continents. They certainly aren’t reflective of how American universities are viewed domestically.

on ARWU
Berkeley is above Yale and Princeton.
UT Austin is above Duke
UCSB is above Duke??? That is crazy!
UM-Twin cities above Northwestern?

There’s dozen upon dozen of examples like that.

My ranking only includes universities from the United States.

Caltech

MIT

Stanford

Harvard

Brown

luc, that list sucks. Berkeley and Cornell over Columbia, UChicago, and Penn…no way, jose.

I think allcapella has it mostly right.

My ranking is how I think an employer/grad school would perceive your school if he/she saw the university name on your resume/CV.

Damn…UPenn Wharton doesn’t show up at all. And Northwestern being ahead of MIT, Chicago, Duke, and Princeton…

Well CEOs I’m sure means business recruiting. and Northwestern is ranked #4 for MBA and Kellogg is very renowned, so from angle it’s not surprising.

@friedman, no way man! That’s just your East Coast bias speaking. Here on the west coast, Berkeley is definitely better than most the ivys. Maybe not HYP, but better than the rest. Now my placement of Cornell may be off, but I think it definitely has a better rep than Columbia and Penn.

Curious?
