Top Chef: Carolinas

I feel like maybe my mom would buy liver wurst for my dad and make sandwiches??

In southern Ohio I know that scrapple (?)is a similar thing - sliced and fried. I don’t know that I’ve tried it. D1 had a roommate from Cincy and she would make it sometimes.

We call our thing liverwurst but it is nothing like commercial liverwurst. It seems similar to what I read about liver mush, made from cooked pork liver, pork shoulder or butt, oatmeal, spices and the braising liquid from cooking the pork and liver.

It’s livermush not mash. Mush with a U. Not my fave but my dad liked it and liver pudding (super similar, slightly different consistency).

I have heard it compared to scrapple but I don’t eat that either.

It’s really a type of pork liver pâté. Here’s a liver pudding recipe: Liver Pudding | Our State

My autocorrect did not like “livermush” for some reason lol. I also wrote something about harvesting shiitake mushrooms but missed the other “I” so was puzzled about it being bleeped out!

Thanks, I corrected it

I, too, don’t have all the names down or any favorites so far. I felt bad for the woman who went home this week, but she really made a cooking mistake so did deserve to go.

When I saw the commercial, I became anti-Padma.

Maybe network TV is considered a step up? or, I assume she makes more money and has more control?

Agree! Especially when nearly all of them did a terrific job with the spice chgallenge.

Still watching and def will keep watching but these contestants just aren’t grabbing me like some of the others.

I sure hope the woman chef from Michigan (how I remember her) with the shoulder issue can continue as long as she qualifies. I would hate for her to get far and have to drop out because of the shoulder - and have taken another contestants opportunity.

I see Oscar is still in it! If you’re ever in Durham check out his restaurants Little Bull, Aaktun, and TaTaco.

Which of the three would you most recommend? We are always checking out restaurants in the area.

They are all supposed to be good. I hear people talk about Little Bull a little more but I don’t think you could go wrong with any of them. Little Bull is a little more fusion (Pocho), Aaktun is a more tropical, TaTaco obvs Mexican.

It didn’t quite get the freeze dried challenge - didn’t think it really tied into the whitewater training center (it was pretty darned wet there, after all…) I think they should have made an entire freeze dried dish/MRE at Camp Lejeune and then the judges and Marines would eat them. lol

I am glad Jennifer had to make a decision on staying or going. It doesn’t seem like a contestant should be able to opt of out of any of the challenges, even if it is just the quick fires.

Just watched ep 6 - the BBQ challenge. It is getting harder/closer.

I do like that this seasons, like past ones, that the contestants seem to be decent people, enjoy being, together, offer to help, etc.

Catching up with what I missed while we were on vacation.

Really like the idea @RookieCollegeMom posted above: create a palatable MRE! Agree that the freeze dry challenge was just meh…

Geez I was worried Jen was having a stroke. That poor woman is falling apart. I have to say Justin seems more smitten with her than him. He seem to adore her.

I know none of that has to do with cooking!

Would have been a fun episode to be a judge and try all that “normal” food!

I was hoping Jen wasn’t having a stroke too! Before the face thing, I was like give that woman so Mobic and let her cook. lol

I hope she is ok now (guess I could Google that). Hopefully it was just tense/tension/pinched nerve kinda thing.

I would have thought Jen would have told Justin to stay - and maybe she will! (Have to wait until the next episode.) Otherwise, I assume Sieger is back in?

If I’m deciding while I rooted for Justin because he was from Michigan, I think Sieger is the better chef. I don’t watch Last Chance Kitchen So I don’t know what’s going on there

Sounds like it was Bells Palsy and she is ok. Not confirmed, but that is what I read. Speculation is that Justin left to be with her when they didn’t know what was going on so Sieger came back for restaurant wars. Justin then went to LCK. I guess we will find out on Monday.

Hard to tell how Jen feels about Justin since she was in so much pain for the competition. She does seem like a great cook.

Sieger cracks me up. And he seems very chill/unflappable.

Jen could have left when they first offered her the chance to leave and return the following season. I don’t really like married couples competing against each other. I do think Justin was right to leave when she was in the hospital getting all those tests.

I liked Rhoda. I wouldn’t haveminded if she had returned.
