Top Chef: Carolinas

Catching up while my husband is traveling on business! he’s not a fan of the competition cooking shows - unless I learn something new and make something tasty. He does like the travel/food shows though.

Watching the restaurant wars. Chef Mina made an appearance!!! My favorite chef! Just came back from Oahu - we always eat kanpachi at Mina’s Fish House!

And Rhoda is baaaack!

I have a group chat with my kids and their spouses. We usually discuss TC after they have all watch, but the GDs, both who are in 1st grade, are now into the show. It takes longer for everyone to watch between school for the littles, and work for the adults; I watch live, and watch LCK the next morning.

It is fun to hear the little girls take on the show each week!

I disagree with who went home on the dinner party challenge. Spoiler alert!

Rhoda had 4 hours and didn’t really make anything but meringue and it didn’t turn out right. Oscar at least cooked. I think the judges think Rhoda is a better chef. I agree, but still thought she should have been eliminated. (In four hours, I could have baked a better dessert.)

I agree with you. Maybe they thought it looked back to bring someone back to just be eliminated. Her dessert was pathetic all around!

Definitely. In 4 hours, one can bake a giant cake! One caveat: what they could make was likely limited by their shopping $$. That said, I would have never attempted meringue if I weren’t a pro at making it! Baking is way less forgiving than cooking when it comes to measuring ingredients.

So sorry to see Duyen eliminated. She had great energy. Unfortunately, she couldn’t recover from the undercooked fish. Thought it was a fun episode, although the mise en place race was less interesting then usual due to the one on one setup.

I think if they still have last chance Kitchen she would have come out the winner and returned. I think she was one of the best cooks there.
Other participants would ask if anyone had extra rice or other ingredients. Rhoda certainly could have asked if anyone had eggs as at least one person did.

Duyen is a very confident chef. If they do an all-stars I bet she might be back.

Laurence has won 4 challenges (and won this week) is probably my favorite. He’s been pretty consistent.

I sort of get a kick out of Sieger. He is not the best chef there. He seems to blend in the background and sort of be an “odd man out”. He also gives the judges a little sh_t sometimes which honestly, sometimes they deserve because they can be a little harsh/bold in their criticisms.

My 6 year old GD thought Sieger should have gone; she likes Duyen. She’s pushing for Laurence for the win!

I did think Duyen should go, but didn’t think the judges would do it.

I’ve decided that the way to decide between the 2 or 3 lowest dishes is think, if I were at a restaurant, which would be “I would not order again” and which would I send it back to the kitchen.
