Top Chef Masters...okay, and Next Food Network Star...

Maybe. But the one I was watching online, very briefly, was like this

http://■■■■■■■.com/kn7zplm

You are right; I was mixing up my Gordon Ramsay scenes. He does both, right? Masterchef has no cursing, but still seems somewhat disrespectful of the contestants, and more drama and antics than cooking, no? The judge with the big red glasses reminds me of the guy in Wall E.

http://calorielab.com/news/wp-images/post-images/wall-e-captain-action-figure.jpg

Was that mean?

The one I like is

I can’t believe FNS cut Nikki last night instead of one of the 2 remaining guys. There’s no way either of those two can win so I smell a rat. I’m expecting a (big, shocking, surprise!) return by Nikki in the penultimate episode to compete against either Stacy or Demaris.

They already had their "return"contestant last week - it was Lovely (yes, really her name ) - and she was promptly eliminated that episode!

I too couldn’t believe they cut Nikki over the guys - I love the pie idea but the dude hasn’t put out more than one or two good pies yet! Russell just scares me! I just don’t enjoy looking at him!!!

I love Stacey - I could watch her on a show - love her personal style, I think she knows her stuff and I like her cooking style. No one for Damerus?? I think Alton has a crush on her!!! If I didn’t know better, I’d think he was being prompted to have her take Paula Deens spot!!!

I can’t believe they cut Nikki :-(. For whatever reason, Sunday night’s episode isn’t up on demand here yet. Now I don’t know if I want to watch. I’m with abasket…I wouldn’t watch either one of the guys, and Demaris…blah. Well, here’s to the win for Stacey.

Ughh…

Hope it turns out all right for him.

How CC is that? Krissy’s (?) son couldn’t miss his state testing to be there with her on television. Am I hooked?

Top Chef Masters 7/31

I SO can’t do the detailed review thing,

Maybe Hugh can. Here is Hugh

"Sue explains that sous chef Nick is like her Little Pony. "

You go, Voltagio brother, with your pressure cooker broth!

Rice pilaf is just rice with stuff in it!

Yep, that is the “stuff” we want to hear from “stars” on that rudderless network. And that is what sends you home.

The competitions on FN are really getting lame. Could they not come up with better candidates? And once they find a real gem not screw it up? Last season, the winner was good - the show still sucked. This year, the show and the cooks all suck big time with people who cannot cook or talk.

They ought to try something different. Really.

My family bonds over FNS and we were sorry to see Nikki go, but that lack of expertise on rice pilaf was a major flub.

Agree most of the competitions are lame, but we started Food Court Wars to pass time on Sunday night and have liked it because we get vested in the contestants and everything is settled in the single episode.

DH calls FN the “fat boy porn channel.” :D

I just watched TCM - interesting to see David Burke compete.

And I’m glad they brought Bryan Voltaggio back. I’m hoping he wins, because he should have won his season!

Don’t really watch Top Chef yet, but have watched NFNS every season. Now, we joke that it doesn’t matter who wins as we will never see them again anyway. (same for HGTV design star). It’s more about the competition than the winner.

I finally watched FNS and was sorry to see Nikki go. She was the only one with an original point of view. I had a heart attack a couple years ago and I still struggle with making meat the side dish. But throughout the show, she had a look of defeat on her face. As for the others, Russell picked up his game. He is the most innovative. But he is really low key. Damaris is lively but classic southern really is nothing new. Rodney is all over the place and hasn’t made much food that is appealing. I find him annoying. And Stacey comes off as fake because she is fake. But really this whole FNS is getting stale.

Part of the FN comes from having fewer and fewer interesting regular stars. When you have to build your shows around people like that fake and pompous Brit muscle man and the egotistic and uber-large Alex G, you know the end is near. None of their “new” shows have been great, and that is why they have to multiply the competition shows. And most of those competition shows are complete duds.

In a way, the FN might very well be the victim of the internet, as one can find much better “cooklng” help in the form of recipes and “how to” videos. The FN is in search of a soul and has a hard time justify its existence.

I don’t claim to be a chef, cook, or foodie. I posted the “pilaf” question on chowhound, and didn’t get a consistent answer, even when folks looked it up.

Personally I like the pilau vs pilaf story.

http://theflexiblechef.blogspot.com/2013/07/rice-pilaf-pilau-or-polow.html

I am disappointed with FNS tonight. I would much rather watch a show that helps me revise my beloved tuna noodle casserole and those funky recipes in my old cookbooks than make something into a pie. I already know that adding booze and bacon to a dish will make it tasty. I don’t even care who wins.

Agree MizzBee - I thought the concept of reinventing old dishes into new and healthier was the most interesting one. The pie thing? I would never watch that. I really like Damaris and her personality, I hope she wins, but I don’t like the concept.

I really thought it would be Nikki, Stacy and Damaris at the end. Russell drives me nuts with his speech pattern.

However, if you notice contestants who haven’t won have gotten shows anyway.

Unfortunately, I think Rodney’s pilot was the best although I’d never watch a show about making everything into pie.

I thought Damaris’ pitch was best, but her pilot wasn’t. I don’t know if it was nerves or just the concept didn’t translate well.

I think Stacy was done in by overthinking. She knew she needed to be more relatable, but her approach backfired on her.

I don’t see any of the finalists lasting more than the season they get for winning.

FNS–I was not sorry to see Stacy go…I, too, think she comes off as phony. I LIKE Damaris best, but I thought Russell rocked his pilot.

TCM–I’m rooting for Bryan V.

Furious. IMO none of those three shows has a chance of being/staying interesting. What is Russell going to do? Go into restaurants and add either bacon or bourbon to everything and call it a day? Didn’t even make sense that what he made had really nothing to do with the sorbet he tried there !

And the pie thing. Bobby Flay were you fuming in your chair??! Sounds like a remake of “Thrown Down”!!! I mean I love pies but that pie he made last night looked like a HOT mess - not something you would eat a whole piece of. He didn’t even really change anything - put all the same flavors/items in and then put a crust around it - how inventive!

And Damaris - ugh - I had started to like her a bit better but putting her flirting style back on just was a HUGE turn off to me - thought maybe she was going to do something like Curtis’s old show - “Take Home Chef” - but he suggestive comments and style made me want to gag!!!

Elton did not like Stacey from the get go. IMO she offers the most flexibility of all of them (the whole season roster!) - half the time the winner doesn’t even end up doing the concept they suggest - nope, FN creates something totally different for them to pilot. Stacie was warm and knowledgeable in front of the camera. She had the experience and knowledge. She was pleasant to look at. And SHE COULD COOK! How is it possible that Russell -who was in the bottom ump-teen times gets to the finale???

I was totally turned off. If those three are the best you have to offer, FN, you might want to be looking for a new concept of a show.

(I know, I know, I’m clearly angry over this!!! Man, to watch a whole season and to end up with finalists like this just makes me feel like I wasted my time this summer!!!)

I also turned it off last night. And abasket, my first thought about Rodney’s show also was that it sounded like “Throwdown”!

Wasn’t one of the contestants eliminated in the beginning because his concept was teaching guys to cook? And Giada said, “There are two guys on either side of me who can cook.” So why is Demaris piloting a show that is equally offensive? Do they really think that women don’t watch FN?

And the last thing we need is a show that teaches how to cook with fat, sugar and alcohol! Yes, the “healthy” thing may have gone overboard, but really, most of us know how to cook stuff that’s bad for us.

I would have watched Nikki or Stacy. These three - not so much.
