Top Engineering Schools with School Spirit and good athletic programs

Hey everyone! I am a rather new user and in my college search I long for a college that is particularly adept at engineering(specifically mechanical and/or civil) and has plenty of school pride. I like the idea of 20,000 screaming students decked out in school colors and the camaraderie a school like that has. A school that exemplifies this would be University of Washington which has a top 20 engineering program and good basketball/football(okay the football team is horrendous) teams in which to root for. As a student I am adequate and attend a college prep school. I have a weighted gpa of 3.7/3.8 along with a 2k SAT/few AP/honors classes/some extracurricular activities. So any suggestions :)

Wisconsin for sure would be one. Texas, Ohio State. Florida, MIchigan. Illinois.

Some to look into:

Wisconsin
Illinois
Virginia Tech
Georgia Tech
Ohio State
Michigan
UVA
Purdue
Texas
USC
Clemson
Penn State
… Any other Big10 school really

Clemson University has a top 20 civil engineering program

Once again, UVA is NOT a top engineering school.

Why is Berkeley not on the list? hehehe…

I’d say Berkeley, Michigan, Georgia Tech, USC, UCLA, Wisconsin, Texas-Austin and UIUC.

^^ Good list! Nonetheless, I would probably replace “UCLA & USC” with “Purdue & PSU”… In fact, I am not even certain if UCLA or USC ranked any higher than TOSU in either Civil or Mechanical discipline?!

Apply to Berkeley, it has everything you want.

^^ “Apply to Berkeley, it has everything you want.”

I do not disagree with the statement! :)

For a combination of Engineering and athletic tradition, I would say the following:

Cornell University (if Hockey is your thing)
Georgia Institute of Technology
Northwestern University
Pennsylvania State University
Purdue University
Stanford University
University of California-Berkeley
University of California-Los Angeles
University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor
University of Southern California
University of Texas-Austin
University of Wisconsin-Madison
Virginia Tech

^ any reason for excluding USC?

Good catch RML. PSU, USC and Vtech all belong.

For the money, you can’t beat VT for this OP’s requirements (even for an OOSer).

All of my Meechigan friends who are married to Hokies say that the school spirit felt at Lane Stadium is pretty on par with The Big House. What’s about 34K more screaming Wolverines, give or take a few? :)

Ann Arbor>>Blacksburg

@ RML,

You’re absolutely correct about Berkeley. Although, with the current budget problems, personally I would stay away as an OOS student. It definitely fits the criteria though.

@ rjkofnovi

UVA is ranked 28th. If that’s not a good enough education for you to succeed in life, then nothing is.

but for engineering, Blacksburg>>Charlottesville

Academically speaking, you are 100% correct. But I think choosing based on which school you like better is more important than stressing over the difference between Va Tech and UVA.

From what I’ve heard, Virginia Tech fits your need perfectly. As soon as you enter Blacksburg, you will catch Hokie fever.

Other great options:
Pennsylvania State University
University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor
University of Texas-Austin
North Carolina State

Nc state university

Biomedical Engineering (ranked 12th) and Virginia Tech is ranked.

Oh, forgot. VA Tech has no BME program.
