Top Private Day Schools

nj: hun school, ranney, peddie

In SF Bay Area College Prep in Piedmont is the only school that ranks (by Forbes) in the national top 20 based on college placement. Similar ivy placement to Andover, St. Paul’s, Exeter.

Kids of the areas movers and shakers, however, are more typically found at Castilleja and Menlo School in Silicon Valley in the enclave of some of the world’s wealthiest folks: Atherton, Menlo Park, Palo Alto.

University and Sacred Heart are tops in the city.

I know that around my area (WA state), the best private day schools are probably Lakeside and Annie Wright?

In Fort Worth:

 • All Saints’ Episcopal School
 • Fort Worth Country Day School
 • Trinity Valley School

Dallas

 • St. Marks (Boys) and Hockaday (Girls)
 • Oakridge
 • Greenhill
 • Cistercian
 • Episcopal School of Dallas

Basically, any school that is part of SPC (Southwest Preparatory Conference). Includes schools in DFW (above), San Antonio (St. Mary’s Hall), Houston (Kinkaid, St. Johns, Episcopal), Austin (St. Stephen’s, St. Andrew’s), OKC (Casady), Tulsa (Holland Hall) and others. All great schools.

Hopkins in New Haven

this has gotta be the oldest thread on cc! it will not die…

Top day schools in Boston:
Roxbury Latin
Nobes & Greenough School
Boston University Academy
Commonwealth School
Concord Academy (I know it’s boarding, but its 2/3 day so…)
Milton Academy (1/2 day so I’ll include it)
BB&N
Boston Latin School (public exam school)
Thayer Academy
Belmont Hill School

Some well regarded Catholic Schools:
Boston College High School
Austin Prep School
Xaverian Brothers High School
St. John’s Prep
St. Sebastian’s School (ISL School, probably the best Catholic HS in Boston area)

In my area it’s Pingry. Every kids wants to go to Pingry, and it’s a school that people know outside of New Jersey, which I guess is pretty cool.
Newark Academy, Delbarton, Montclair-Kimberly, Moorestown Beard are good too, but Pingry is the biggie.

twoods158: how do you compare Dallas schools such as St Marks vs. Greenhill vs. Cistercian vs. ESD, or Hockaday vs. Greenhill vs. ESD. I have a son and daughter applying for 8 and 6th grades. Thanks!

I know this is a very late response but as a senior in one of the SPC schools that knows quite a bit about those dallas schools I figured I would give you some imput haha.

If you are looking for straight college admissions or academic prestige for your son St. Mark’s is no doubt the best option, their college acceptance list is absolutely ridiculous (you can find this in their student newspaper which is on their website). But also I think you lose quite a lot going with an all-male school, and they definitely produce a certain type of student after the experience. I think Hockaday is a similar experience for girls although they may not have the same amount of extreme success at Ivies and top colleges, both have a great mix of athletics and academics though.

You can’t go wrong with Greenhill or ESD either, I know ESD’s academic workload may not be as high as others yet I think they have a great campus and really there may be little difference between the two.

I would not recommend Cistercian, the campus is pretty drab and from the people I have met they do not seem to enjoy the experience quite as much as others.

Really all the SPC school are great, I guess it comes down to which one you feel you fit into the most.

Thank you very much, tfm2011 ! I didn’t see your post until yesterday.
What do you think that will be lost by going to an all-boys/all-girls school? What do you mean by they definitely produce a certain type of student"? What ā€œcertain typeā€? Good or bad?

Yeah, I agree St Mark’s SAT/college matriculation is better than Greenhill. That is exactly my concern, now that my kid got admitted by Greenhill, but WL at St Mark’s. I wonder where does the difference come from?

OK the person who commented about Chicago day schools, why wasn’t North Shore Country Day up there? It’s really great! I go there now!

But, in no particular order, here are the good Chicago schools-

North Shore Country Day (suburbs)
Chicago Latin
Francis Parker
University Lab School
Lake Forest Academy (suburbs)

DON’T waste your time applying to Loyola Academy or Roycemore-they’re both in the suburbs and they aren’t good schools. Loyola is ok, but as like a safety school I guess. They have like an 70% acceptance rate I think, and to me it’s basically the public school you pay extra for and have to wear uniforms to! I’d rather go to public school, honestly. Not good matriculation either. Roycemore is basically where you send your kids before you send them to military school-not very highly regarded at all in the Chicago area and is a joke academically.

Hopkins School
New Haven CT

BC mainland:

St. George’s School (boys)

According to [Matriculation Stats](http://matriculationstats.org/) these are the top 10 day schools and the top two boarding schools. Six of the top seven (all except Trinity) are single sex

I thought I’d add this recent data point from Stuart Country Day, an all-girls Catholic (Sacred Heart network) day school in Princeton: 15% of the Class of 2012 was admitted to Princeton. Stuart is not really known as a ā€œfeederā€ school for Princeton, so this was great news. Fear the Deer!
