Top Schools Admissions QUESTION

My school is really well known for math. The program is very strong and we’ve sent 2-3 students in the past 3 years to HYPSM for math (IMO qualifiers and all that… very strong). I’ve heard that to get in to those kinds of schools, you should be good at something that your school is good at. Is that true? If I’m not winning math contests, am I screwed?

I really think it depends on what you’re interested in. Most schools do compare you to your peers and your school profile rather than the other applicants. If you’ve shown that you’re strong in math but aren’t necessarily winning math comps, I don’t think it matters. What matters is you’re a good math student. I mean, obviously, if your classmates are applying to those schools and ARE winning contests then they have a much bigger advantage over you for that reason.

Most of MY classmates aren’t… just the years before me. My grade is lazy and most of them probably won’t apply to the same schools as I’m considering applying to. Thank you though :)
