Top Schools admissions

Hello CC,

First, I wanted to be clear: I’m in no way trying to create a “omg I don’t have this?? I’m screwed for life, no college, time to work at McDonalds” thread. With that in mind, I just wanted some of your opinions.

So top schools, namely the top 15, I know a lot of people here suggest that the aim is to have 700’s across the board to be on level with other applicants. To, essentially, not “raise an eyebrow”. Now, supposing one or more of these were not accomplished, what other parts of the app can make up for it or make an admissions officer not care about it? From essays, to teacher recommendations, to extracurriculars (examples?), etc.

(Or ACT Equivalent [around a 31?])
One under 700?:
Two under 700?:

So, if you can offer your ideas, I would really appreciate it.

Thank you all in advance!!

I guess sub-700s in CR or W could be made up in your essays, however, if you have a 300 in your CR but write like an author, that would likely raise some questions about plagiarism rather than making up for lower scores. I’d say anything from 600-700 could be made up by your essays

There have always been applicants with a 1900 SAT score who got admitted to Harvard and a 2400 who got rejected. It all really depends on how the admission officer views ur resume holistically. Through the essays and recs. they try to create a parallel with ur test scores and then judge on ur potential. All they want is someone who blends into their education ethic and has goals similar to that of the college. Hence standardised test scores are just a part of application the colleges use to know u better.
