Top Tier admission from Title 1 High School?

Hello Cc! I’ve been lurking around here a bit and I’m making my first post. My DS is a senior, starting his applications to a nice variety of schools ranging from Yale to the SUNY that is 10 minutes from our house. After reading many posts by amazing kids and families on here, I’m a little worried about his high school. It’s urban, 70% free lunch. He’s taken every AP class (all 3!) and is taking Stat over at the CC because they ran out of math classes for him (Calc AB as a junior.)He also is in IB english, history, chem and french. That’s all he could take. Will his school hurt him? Do schools like Yale even look at apps from socioeconomically disadvantaged high schools like ours? He has great scores, grades, in depth ECs, etc. We are not URM or technically “low income” but I ran the calculators and we would qualify for fin. Aid at all the privates on his list, and we can afford the SUNYs… thanks so much for any info you can help us with!

^ It’s been a while, but my S, not URM or low income, who went to a borderline Title One school (crossed over about a year later–it was about 50% free lunch when he w as there), with all the APs available (6), and no IB’s cuz we don’t have any, got into his ED school–Columbia. So yes, it’s possible.

Schools like Yale love to get apps from high schools like yours, especially if the applicant is a strong candidate. In a word: diversity.

Thank you for your reassuring replies!
