If the topic for the app is to “tell us about yourself” in general “to make us understand you better” (paraphrased), how do I come up with an idea without it being stereotypical?

If you’re looking for “topics for application essays in GENERAL”, then likely your essay will be similar to others who have nothing to write about because it will be a general essay that details things that apply to a lot of students. Think of at least one thing that sets you apart from your classmates and write about it. I’m not an expert (I haven’t even applied to college yet, but I have all my essays written), but I think it’s sound advice; wait to see what others have to say. I think my essays are rather unique, in a good way (I’m a VERY unique person). Some people may have a more difficult time coming up with an application topic that sets them apart from the crowd than others will. That’s okay, though.

I have not seen that as an actual essay prompt. That would be too easy. More likely as an interview question. Which college is that?

If you encounter that prompt, perhaps this will inspire you:

Not necessarily college prompts. Just application prompts to a variety of groups (schools, programs, summer, etc.)
