For the common app essay I’m torn between two ideas:

Describe someone from history and tell why/how that influenced you. I chose Ferris Bueller and talk about his passion for life, spirit of adventure and loyalty to friends has inspired me to be brave, put myself out there, take risks and love life.

Talk about a meaningful diversity experience/encounter and what it meant to you. Here I discuss my collaborating with a Korean music producer to record my first original song. Also that I sing back up for different African-American singers with the same producers. Taught me a lot about breaking down stereotypes and has made me want to do all I can to stop racial stereotyping.

Send both to me in a PM. I’ll do my best to help.

EDIT: sorry, I read too quickly.

The second choice seems to be particularly identifying and hard to forget. Though, either of these essays could work quite well. It all comes down to which topic produces the highest quality essay I suppose.

Although the first one might seem more impersonal, bland, and “dry” than the second one, be very careful not to let yourself sound pretentious with the second idea. Ultimately, I don’t think it really should matter which topic you write about as long as it’s “you” - it could be about reality TV for all I (and, for that matter, the adcom) care. Just go with whatever feels natural, and be sure that you’re satisfied with what you’ve written.
