I just saw an all too brief news clip on a tornado that whipped through Westchester - I am not sure but I think near White Plains. (?) I would greatly appreciate it if anyone could tell more about it.

Comments from any local residents, tornado chasers, or just plain old weather watchers welcome.

Waterspout spotted in the Hudson near the TappanZee. They posted warnings for Westchester and Fairfield Counties. It apparently lost its tornadic signature on the radar before crossing the Ct line in North Stamford and the cell exited CT into the sound somewhere in the East Norwalk area. Lots of trees down, traffic messed up, but I did not hear about major damage.

(I was watching the storm on radar since at one point it was headed directly at my house, and then at my store and then at my son’s summer job! Did not hit any of us!)

Thanks and glad to hear that you escaped harm. I didn’t know what to think because of the sparse news coverage. While it isn’t the first to the hit the area - I think a small, yet fierce, twister whipped through part of Bedford Hills and Katonah quite a few years back - it’s just plain wierd weather and a little too close for comfort. Home base for me is Westchester-Fairfield.

There’s an article in today’s NYT online. If you do a google-news search you’ll find all of the coverage. It seems that there was some pretty serious damage in Westchester to a commercial building and a lot of trees down. Trees don’t make the news – but rip a building apart and the cameras are there!

asteriskea, I live fairly close to where the tornado touched down. Sounds like you know the area, so I’ll describe it more specifically as being Route 9A in Hawthorne-Saw Mill River Road. There was a California Closets warehouse on 9A on the right side as you head north, which had it’s cinder block walls blown out. There were lots of tree tops sheared off and lots of power lines downed, but amazingly no serious injuries. Most people had their power restored today.

My mom was telling me that California Closets was destroyed.
Was this also near the movie theater?
I know that trees were down on one of the Metro North lines

bluestar,
Trees were down on the Harlem line north of North White Plains. People were being bused from the Chappaqua Metro-North station to North White Plains, but that’s all been cleared up now. You are thinking of the Hawthorne Multiplex and it’s just north of where this occurred.

I was so dissapointed. The storm was going really strong and I was planning on having people over for a “tornado party” and then it dissapeared.

oooh ok. Yeah, I was supposed to go up toward Chappaqua to visit a friend (I was in the city) and she told me not to waste my time with the train.

Thanks so much for all the local details. Good to hear from the Westchester residents out there. I know Tarrytown better than Hawthorne (there is a wonderful historic village located there if anyone is travelling through the area looking for touristic sites to visit) but not as well as the Chappaqua, Pleasantville, Mt. Kisco area. With all the powerlines and train service down it must have been a mess. Glad to hear the damage was minimal. I didn’t realize it but the area does have a higher than average number of tornados according to the National Weather Service. I actually had to google that because my D loves wild weather. If you ask her what she wants to do her current answer is tornado chaser. Fortunately, she is still young.
