Tornado Shelters

I have a relative living in Oklahoma. We are very worried about the tornados, and wondering if we should help them with a shelter. Is there a certain type that most people use? I read about one in the garage. Is one better than another? Is it a dumb idea? thanks!

I have one in my garage called FamilySafe. The sales pitch was that it protects against an F5 tornado. The reality is that it protects against a 2x4 thrown at the shelter at F5 speeds. Who knows what would happen if a tree is thrown your way. Cost about $6000 to put in and it is bolted into the garage’s concrete. You can get a cheaper one that is in-ground. Then again, I installed mine 10 years ago when I moved to Oklahoma. I would say that an in-ground shelter is best because trees and cars can be thrown into your house. The problem with in-ground is the potential damage to your foundation and tension bars. Whatever you do, do not buy an outdoor shelter. Running outside during a tornado is the worse thing you could do. Search YouTube for more info.

thank you for your answer really appreciate it!
