Ok, so I downloaded BitTorrent. I am trying to get free music/tv shows out of it, but I don’t want to risk being tracked, or hacked, or anything like that. Therefore, I need to be able to download my music/shows directly onto a blank CD and then delete the files from my hard drive. Books have little threat of tracking/hacking/seeding/leeching (heh).

So, I tried downloading MagicISO (a program that burns torrents onto CDs). I tried everything. WinRAR, unrar, and 7zip. Nothing allowed me to install MagicISO, so I have concluded that you simply can’t downloaded MagicISO onto a mac.

I can still use torrents to download books and stuff but I really want music and tv shows. So, can someone give me an idea of how to do this safely? I really don’t want to screw up my computer. Anyone knowledgeable about this stuff?

Burning them to stuff is probably less safe. If the feds come after you (which I doubt they will) they’ll look through all your cd’s and dvd’s that you burned. Probably the best way to go is saving all your downloaded stuff to an external hd that you hide somewhere good, if you’re really that worried.

MagicISO is just for windows, btw, but I recommend just getting an emulator like Daemon Tools or Alcohol 120%. I don’t know if those work for Mac, or any compatible similar Mac programs off hand though.

And don’t worry about getting caught. Just don’t go overboard.

Do you know the procedure the feds go through? I’m curious. Will they look in your attic? Will they look at every single box in your home? What if you put all of your questionable material inside a huge featureless box? Would lots of decoys help? (but decoys might make the feds more suspicious, so I’d suspect that it would backfire).

Aren’t those better for computer games? :p

Anyways, when it comes to music and movies, I don’t think you even need a special burning program. All you need to do is to drag and drop individual music and movie files (because the files work individually, rather than as a huge package [which computer games can only work as])

I’m not familiar with their exact procedure or any secret official stuff, but I know that they go through your house and confiscate anything that might be illegal. What they want to do is convict you, so they’ll go through anything and everything that they feel will help them. So actually, decoys might be a good idea lol.

They’re actually for any .iso (or .cue, .bin, etc.) files. What those files are is essentially what goes on a cd (or dvd). What the program does is it tricks your computer into thinking that it has an extra cd drive (hence virtual drive) and once you pick the iso you want it to run, it’ll play it as if it had been burned to a cd. Only problem (especially for games) is that you need to keep the iso if you want to keep using it.

Yeah. But music and movies usually come in RAR or ZIP files right? (I don’t think they come in iso, cue, or bin files). But then again, I haven’t really downloaded music or movies (only books and computer games)

Usually music just comes as mp3, movies vary a lot. Sometimes you’ll find it just as avi, but others it comes as iso or whatever for people to burn and sell. I’m not interested in that though… Too much work and really conspicuous lol

Oh yeah - and mj93 - the authorities usually don’t go into your house to try to find illegal stuff. It’s only the RIAA and MPAA that really care about that sort of stuff. THEY are the ones who have to try to find your IP address and associate your IP address with torrent downloads. If they catch you (I think the chances are very low - although not exactly negligible as it is in the case of books - the chances of being caught off torrents are much lower than the chances of being caught via direct p2p), then they’ll send you a letter challenging you to a lawsuit. You can either challenge it or settle for a couple thousand dollars. So actually you don’t have to worry about putting things on your hard drive.

But I am mostly worried about being hacked, tracked, or spammed.

In order to avoid those things, I have to delete all remnants of the music torrent from my hd, right? So I have to get them on an external device, like a CD … so I need a burner … but that Max program sounds pretty good. I’ll probably go with that.

I do. It’s a stupid habit from when I had a crappy computer that would crash if I kepy any downloaded music/movies on it for more than a few hours.

Best way to download torrents on a mac is by downloading Azureus and storing files to an external hard drive. To be safe right click the torrent when it is complete and click on delete torrent file because your laptop saves every single torrent extension you have used and that is the easiest way for the feds to get you. As for burning CD’s try downloading toast titanium (torrent of course) and then burn it. Easy as hell :)

Download and install PeerGuardian. It blocks any incoming connections from governments and the RIAA MPAA and other anti-P2P organizations so they don’t even know you’re downloading anything. You can’t get spammed or hacked from downloading a torrent you’d have to run a file in a torrent that was a virus, which is extremely unlikely on both Windows and OS X (but especially OS X).
