“As we hiked” doesn’t make sense when paired with future tense.
“We will need them as we hike,” sure – that’s future and present subjunctive, I think. But future and past doesn’t work.
The tense of the sentence is past(were stifling–> were indicates past) so you can choose the option that indicates past tense(would)
