Given the competitiveness of admissions in 2007-08 as evidenced by the experiences of folks on CC, the low acceptance rates, and the record-setting high yield rates and number of applications received by many schools this past year, I am speculating that this coming year will be even more competitive. With some schools overenrolled, I think acceptance rates will drop.

Any thoughts from others?

Anecdotally, I would have to agree with the tenor of this theme.

At Goaliegirl’s school (not one of the ones typically mentioned in the highly selective category), one of the converstations I got into with another parent of a returning student was about the last minute shuffling of dorm assignments due to the school being at 100% of capacity (confirmed later by the headmaster in opening remarks).

Also talking with various coaches at this particular school, they seem to be less flexibility in FA offers for athletes, indicating that they seem to be have other (money paying) priorities beyond athletics. Let’s face it, when you have open slots in the school and are a little short on X team, you can afford to bring in a player at a discount as long as that person covers more than the marginal cost of attendance (food, and other direct costs - most BS costs like staff, power, etc. are fixed).
