Only at the Tour! I’d heard about the finish during the day but DH hadn’t. Before the evening replay I told him “You have to watch because you’re going to see something you’ve never seen before at the Tour.” We’ve been devoted fans since the mid 90s. In the end, I think they did the right thing as far as the finishing placements. But good Lord, what were they thinking with the lack of crowd barriers so close to the finish?
I watched bits and pieces over lunch, including the bizarre running through the crowds. Here is a pretty good recap, and apparently there were no barriers due to wind?
They moved the finish 6K lower and may not have had time to move usual barriers to the new spot. I’m not sure the proximity to the finish was the problem though, I’ve seen times nearly every year that looked worse than that and nothing has happened. People won’t even learn from this because right after it happened an idiot was still running alongside holding a sign.
So many issues the UCI/ASO need to address; the footed barriers, crowd control in general and the motos. Too many incidents over the past couple of years. Now that the sport is getting itself cleaned up from the sins of the recent past, it would be great if they could get these other issues sorted. Pro cycling is a spectacle like no other, all the better if they can reduce the peripheral problems. Having said that, it maybe have been worth it just this once for the sight of Froomey running up the road and then riding that clown bike!
