Track and Field Transfer Portal

I have a question. When I entered the transfer portal I emailed a couple of schools and one of the schools I really would like to go replied back showing interest. Of course I replied to their email but I haven’t hear back from them since then. It’s been a little over a week and I don’t know what to do if I should do anything else. I sent a follow up email but still haven’t heard back. I know the coach is at Oregon right now so I understand the delay, but still it makes me nervous and what if he doesn’t want to add me to the team anymore. My dad suggest reaching to his phone number but I’m not sure. Any comments?

Never cold call a coach. Like you said, he is at Nationals. Send another email early next week.

Thank you, I was thinking the same but my dad can be a little stubborn. Not even a text tho? (Js to make sure)

You have to be patient. A week? and you know he’s at nationals?

If you follow the team/athletes at nationals, you’ll have something to say when you do send an email. “Great job in the 400 hurtles by Y. That relay was so exciting.”

Did this coach specifically give you his cell phone number and tell you you could reach out to him? Unless you’ve been regularly texting, I wouldn’t do that, especially in the middle of Nationals.

I am no expert in the arena of athletic recruiting but it seems to be a terrible idea to contact a coach about transfer opportunities during Nationals. It would strike me as presumptuous.

Nationals are over this Saturday. Send another email on Monday, and demonstrate you have some knowledge of what happened at Nationals. If you have been calling or texting with the coach, it’s ok to contact them that way on Monday. Good luck.

Any advice @politeperson?

I agree with others not to call or text right now unless he told you to do that.

Some of this depends on what he said in the email and what you said in response. It’s not clear to me how much true interest there was, and usually I’d expect a phone call if the coach was interested.

I’d follow up with an email Monday reiterating your interest and asking where they stand in their decision making process.

(Coaches are definitely multi-tasking while in Eugene as there’s a lot of down time sitting in the stands. But it’s still not a great time to initiate contact unless you’ve been texting back and forth and it’s expected).

Keep your other options open in the meantime.

The week of NCAA championships have historically been official “no-contact” periods for DI schools. I haven’t kept up with the rules recently, however.

The time of D1 Nationals (June 11-14this year) is a dead period, but that only prohibits in-person recruiting. Coaches and athletes can still communicate via phone, email, etc. during dead periods.

Really? I thought it was no contact. :woman_shrugging:

Easy enough for anyone to google.

Still unless directed by the coach to be in touch during Nationals, it makes sense to wait just a day or two until they are complete.

I wasn’t questioning just “huh? I didn’t know that” … honestly, I am glad to have recruiting behind us.
