If this isn’t the right place please recommend a good place to ask. Our son is a triple and long jumper. Jumping is his passion in life. He has been accepted and will attend UC Davis in the fall. He’s below UC Davis walk on standards. He thinks he shouldn’t even contact the coach. He jumps 21s (walk on standard is 22) and triple jumps 41s (walk on standard is 45). He comes from a small high school and is jumping this with very minimal coaching and it’s from his pe teacher. I know I’'m a mama, but I hate to see him drop it when he could potentially meet those with a little coaching.
In my opinion it’s worth contacting the coach if your son is interested in being on the team. There may be more flexibility than it looks like on paper, particularly if the coach believes your son fits the typical physical profile for his events.
It does not ever hurt to reach out to the coach. When your son talks to the coach, don’t have him make excuses but rather have him focus on what he sees as his potential. If you look on tfrrs.org you will see that UC Davis has an excellent jumps squad. Have your son reference the jumpers and their stats and comment on how he feels he could grow as a jumper being surrounded by such talent. Good luck to your son…my daughter is a long and triple jumper too!
