Tracking views on Facebook?

I have recently noticed tracking on some FB group posts. So, if someone posts a comment, right below a small check-mark appears as soon as someone else views it, and next to the check-mark it says ‘seen by 1’ and if you hover the cursor over the check, it will show you the name of the person. And it goes on, ‘seen by 9’ etc.

First of all, I thought that FB had declared that nothing like this would happen as it violates privacy. (or am I wrong here?)

Secondly, if indeed this can be done, I would like to utilize it in my own FB group where we buy, sell & trade in town. Anyone know how to? I have searched to no avail.

I don’t see any view count on facebook. I see a “like” button that shows the number that have actively pressed the “like” button and if I hover over it I can see the names of people that “like” the post, but they must actively press the button to add to the count and appear there.

Oh it’s not in every FB account, and in fact it may only be in Groups. I am a member of several FB groups and last week I saw this track/count in one of the groups and today I saw it in another. Mysterious…

I belong to one group, I see it as well. It is a small private group, I don’t know if it is just a feature of closed groups or not…

I only see it in closed groups. It’s really annoying.

I have a FB page for my program at work. It is a “page” and does track the views now. Don’t know that I can see who viewed it- at least not from my iPad.

So views are also on “pages” - which is different than a “group”.

I was just looking on an open group and noticed the “seen by” count after some of the posts. I didn’t know about hovering over it - but after reading this thread went back. It was seen by like 52 people and the names were all there. What I don’t know - is do only those that “joined” the group show up or everyone who looked? So much for privacy…

What doesn’t make sense to me is it’s counting that particular post, so does it only count the most recent post? Because once I’m on the page, how do they know which post I’m actually reading? Supposedly it tracks the responses to posts - and will even give the time you were on and all.

I set up a private group for my high school class and do indeed see it there. What’s not clear to me me is how they actually know what’s been seen or not. Some posts have been seen by nearly everyone in the group and others haven’t. Anyway, for me as the class secretary it’s nice to see who is actually using the group even if they aren’t posting.

My understanding is that this was set up for just that purpose- so those using the group can track if everyone’s read whatever update, information etc. that’s been posted. So that’s why I was wondering about what if it’s an open group - do you see everyone that looks or just those that are part of the group.

I can see how this could be helpful in your situation - I guess it all depends how you look at it.

I am in 4 closed FB groups and I see the tracking in 2 of them, but not in the other 2…I was wondering if its going to be one of those automatic forced things,( like Timeline) that is slowly phased in.

so much for the proclamations of privacy…

Mathmom,
so, you did not set up the tracking? It just magically appeared one day?

My family has a closed group on FB and “seen by” is only in that group. I dont see it on my news feed. We actually like the feature so we know who has seen the post. My only question is how does it know you have seen it. What does one do to make it count?

It is not voluntary. It is being phased in as far as I can tell. You don’t actually have to ‘read’ the posts so it can be very misleading to an administrator or others in the closed group because if a member opens the group page whatever is visible at that time they are marked as having ‘seen by’. They may read one post, post their own update and read nothing else, read everything present, etc., but to everyone else in the group it is going to show that the member has seen and presumably read the information/threads that were present on the page at that time. It now puts the onus on group members when they enter the page to read everything, as that is going to be the assumption. This can work well for certain groups, and perhaps not so well for others. As everything for facebook it is a frustration when something appears randomly and there is no opt-out.

I noticed this in a closed group - it appeared a few days ago. I really hate this. There are posts that I may not want to comment on that I’d rather not people see that I’ve read.

^Yes, it might seem that I’m ignoring someone when actually others have made the same comment I was thinking of, so I don’t post a repetitive statement.

I was not aware of setting up tracking, my recollection was that my only choices were how private the posts are. I set it up so the posts are only visible to those in the group. I can’t imagine the 80 women from the class of 1973 care if others know they viewed a post or not. Since you don’t have to click on a post to read it, it seems to me it could be undercounting by a lot, or counting everyone who goes to the page.

Mostly I don’t see this as very useful. I’m interested in whether people are going to the page, I assume they scan through the new posts. I can see if they’ve commented. I don’t really care if they’ve read a post and haven’t commented.
