Trade Law

Hi, I’m applying to colleges and was originally thinking of pursuing investment banking as a career. However, with the market crash and percieved ending of wealth in investment banking I’m thinking of another career path. My biz teacher told me that with the government increasing regulation in the future, and reverting to socialist/anti-capitalist ideals ib/banking in general doesn’t seem to be a good career. He told me that a degree in government policy + law from top school is the next big thing like IB in the 80s and tech in the 90s as a result of these drastic changes in government.

My simple question is:

 1. Is my business teacher’s prediction correct about the future demand of trade law/government policy degree?

thanks.

bump, can anyone help/offer advice?

“reverting to socialist/anti-capitalist ideals”

I am not in a position to judge your teacher’s predictions but I don’t know about this. It seems that people or organizations with socialist ideals may have higher voices, but don’t law makers and government fundamentally work in favor of whoever that has the highest voices or who can pay them in the end; big corporations?

As far as the “government policy + law from top school” route, isn’t that a typical lobbyist’s route who works for THE people who can pay to get governments to listen to them; again big corporations? I thoguht the lawyers always had better job security than the IBankers, though they didn’t get paid as much. Of couse, this should apply to those lawyers from top law schools since the number of lawyer is already overflowing.

I personally think however the government twists industry, those bankers will eventually find their way to survive and suck on people’s blood one way or the other . They always did. So, I think its going to be more like a “fittest suvive” situation rather than socialism. If you want to follow the demands and job security, you can find it in the medical field.

just my 2 cents…

If your only goal is to find a career where you can make a butload of money, pick something else. From what I have heard, if that is your only motivation you are going to be miserable. Just my 2 cents.
