Traditions Book Store

Does anyone have experience buying/renting books from Traditions bookstore? D received a flyer saying she could reserve her books in advance. By providing her UIN number the bookstore will get her schedule from A&M and have her books ready when she arrives in August. They want a credit card to reserve but claim they will not charge the card until the books are picked up. Student must also sign a waiver stating A&M can release the class schedule to the bookstore. It asks if student if NEW books are acceptable if used books are unavailable. Again, does anyone have experience with this bookstore. Thanks.

Traditions is probably as good as any… They will all do this and the MSC bookstore will push it during NSC
I would like to offer this - others please add your opinion as well… I would wait until you D has gone to class, checked with the professor to see if the book is even needed, then pick up the books.

Really? Seems like by then all the used books would be gone? I was hoping my son could order used books online, but he’d need to order ahead to allow for shipping. Have you tried that?

Can you use one of the websites (ie PickAProf) to tell if the prof requires the book?

I’m not saying dont do the hold - I’m saying don’t pick them up until after the first days of classes.
We did the hold book thing last year - and yes - when she went to pick them up they were all celophaned together with her name on them, so they were done in advance.
we paid for all books and went on our merry nieve way…
problem with ordering the books on-line is you need to see the book to get the the number (UBSN?) they will not give you that number at the bookstores
my daughter was a freshman last year - she never opened a couple of books - just sayin’ - if you ask the prof point blank in class - the prof will give you an answer.

Ahh… I see what you mean…that’s probably the right way to do it the first semester anyway. Maybe we’ll defer the online attempts until the second semester. I’m told if you email the prof they will supply the ISBN…ymmv.

I agree with klparker312. I didn’t even open/use some of the books my prof book list supposedly “required.” You should really wait until the prof says that you NEED it. And I bought several books from students on craigslist. Cheaper than the bookstores and those students wouldn’t get as much ripped off as for trading those books in for wayyy less money.

So we can reserve the entire set, but then pick & choose the ones to buy? That would be perfect!

I just completed my first year of college–and I have found that it is best to wait until you go to a class and find out which materials you need from the prof. If you buy a book and then your prof tells you you don’t need it–you will only get a fraction of the money you spent when you sell it back (ha but this also happens with books you use.) Also try and find the CHEAPEST deal-- which also includes renting them traditions (not all books can be rented though) or chegg.com – renting saves a lot of money. If the class requires novels try and find them at half price books or a similar venue. Textbook prices are insane, so don’t give in buying them at the MSC. I have found good deals at textbook solutions also !(textbooksolutions.com)

Hope this helps!
