Is there a train that can commute between San Diego and Stanford?
How long does it take?
How much is it?

Any other good ways (like trains) except driving and flying?

There is a train from Palo Alto to San Francisco, and then you could probably take a bus/train from SF to San Diego. But as far as direct transportation from Stanford to San Diego goes, I don’t know of anything like that.

That’s not a commutable distance if that’s what your asking. It’s day-tripable, but you wouldn’t want to do that every day.

oh no I’m not looking to commute daily. Just wanted to know how convenient it is to make that trip on a regular basis (once every two weeks?)

Much easier and far less time consuming to fly to SD from San Jose Airport.

My cousin used to take Greyhound from Santa Barbara to Oakland. I’m sure you can get from San Jose to San Diego or take some close variant route.

You’d need to take Amtrak. You can do it, but it’s on a once daily sleeper train (there’s regular seats for this distance I’m sure)

http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Amtrak/am2Route/Vertical_Route_Page&c=am2Route&cid=1081256321841&ssid=132

The sense I’d get through Amtrak’s variety of bus/train or just train routes is that it’s minimum 11 hours, which seems kind of high to me.

Oakland is 1 hour by car north of PA, on the other side of the Bay. The Amtrac train makes many stops along the way to SD, which is why it takes so long.

I somehow can’t find the train secretcro is talking about, the site is sort of confusing. Where is that specific train route and schedule?
Thanks

Just google amtrak

you will definitely have to change in LA, or it might actually be in Fullerton. That could add lots of time, depending on length of layover. From there you should be able to get pretty close to Stanford and bus it the rest of the way

I checked Greyhound, and San Diego to San Jose is approximately $100 round trip. Each way is about 11 hours, depending on the time you leave. Amtrak will cost about $120, and each leg is about 12 hours. If you fly Southwest, it can cost from $100-$260, depending on how far ahead of time you book your flight. That only takes 1 hour and 20 minutes, gate-to-gate, for each leg.

thanks celestial605, I get it now.

Hi! Here are your options: Trainwise, you would take the Marguerite shuttle (the Stanford shuttle system) to the Palo Alto Caltrain station. Then you’d take Caltrain (the commuter train line) south to the San Jose Diridon station, which is a co-station with Amtrak. From there, you can take the Coast Starlight south, or some other options – you’d have to talk to Amtrak. The thing to know is that Amtrak can run 6-12 hours late, regularly.

If you wanted to fly, you would take the Marguerite to the Palo Alto Caltrain station, then to fly from San Jose, take Caltrain south to Santa Clara and then take the VTA #10 free airport shuttle to the airport, or to fly from San Francisco International, take Caltrain north to Millbrae and transfer to BART to go the last bit to the airport. You could also pay for a door to door airport shuttle. As others have pointed out, SJC is usually a better airport for cheap fare deals, but it varies – there are times I get better fares out of SFO.
