Transcriptions = No-no?

I’ve been on a dire quest to find another ballad for auditions and I fell in love with It Don’t Make Sense from Parade. One problem, however: There is no sheet music for it. So I listened to the CD over and over and over and sat infront of my piano for a long time and finally came out with a transcription of about a minute and a half. I was wondering if colleges will care if it is not a published piece but rather a new compilation in itself. Should I stay away from using a transcribed piece?

If the transcription is well done, and notated in a computer program (Finale, Sibelius, etc.) so it is easy to read, it should be okay. But if the accompaniment is sketchy as transcribed, you may want to steer clear.

I made sure that I printed it on the computer. It is very easy to read

I think transcriptions are fine but I would pay someone professional to do it.

I’m just curious, but why is there no sheet music for it?

That particular song was never released, apparently.

Interesting - I have never seen Parade, but I have seen the songbook. I went to You Tube when I read the post and did see a performance of that song - very dramatic.

I would contact Jason Robert Brown if I were you. He is known to be quite responsive. Just Google his website (it lists his email). My girlfriend recently performed in Last Five Years and he actually sent her a “break a leg email” taking a lot of interest in how she prepared for the part. Now my D loves JRB but she stayed away from his material after hearing that most of his songs tend to be difficult to play for accompanists. May be this song is different? By listening to it on You Tube I really can’t tell.

The song doesn’t seem too hard to play. My transcription, in my humble opinion, is pretty good (especially for a first-timer).

As for the sheet music, it isn’t published in the vocal selections and you cannot get the full score unless you pay the royalties for the whole show. Also, I’m pretty broke so I can’t afford to pay a pro to do a transcription for me when I’m not even sure that my vocal teacher will like me singing this.
