Transfer Admission Chances

When applying to colleges last fall as a high school senior, I had trouble getting accepted to many of my first choice schools because of a low subsection score on my ACT in math, despite high scores (30s and above) in other areas. I ended up attending college out of state, and would like to transfer back in state. Would my chances of admission after a strong first semester increase? Or would it be wise to wait a little longer to transfer?
