Hello everyone!

First time poster so go easy on me!!!

I’m basically trying to figure out what are my chances as a transfer student to the following schools. I have a 3.33 GPA. At the end of this semester, I will have 58 credits. I currently have 42 completed credits. In addition, I will take a few classes over the summer. I’m from a CC in Michigan. Anyways, here are the schools…

Michigan
North Carolina
Florida
Minnesota

Comments are greatly appreciated.

can you be more specific?

Sure thing.

Through fall of 2007: I have 42 completed credits.

Through spring of 2008: I will have 58 completed credits.

When the spring semester of 2008 is complete, I will have earned an AA in General Studies.

I’m applying for fall of 2008 admission at the schools listed above.

U of M or MSU?
U of F or FSU?
UNC or NCSU?

If he meant the nc st, or mich st, im pretty sure he would have said so. its not that hard of a question.

U of Mich - reach
UNC Chapel Hill - high reach
U of Florida - possible match - slight reach
U of Minnesota - possible match - slight reach

You should really try to get that GPA up for consideration at some of the above reach schools.

however, some of the schools within the U’s have differing requirements;some may be easier to get into, some not so much.

Good Luck

I don’t understand how Michigan or UNC would be reach or high reaches for him. A Michigan admissions counselor I talked to said they are looking for a 3.2-3.5 in their transfer students. UNC posts data for transfer applicants, and the average GPA of accepted applicants is a 3.4. His 3.33 is very close to that.

Out of all those schools, I think that Florida is the one most likely to reject him. Florida is very picky about transfers, and almost never lets anyone in that doesn’t have 60 credits. With 58, he’s under that number.

It is more difficult to get into most schools with under 60 credits, because you are applying for Sophomore status and not Junior status. I would suggest trying to take a class over the summer, or taking a second half of the semester class to push those credits up. Also inform the schools you are doing this - contact them as it helps in transfer admissions.

I’m not very informed about Minnesota, although their ~40% acceptance rate tells me it isn’t as numbers-based as their freshman admissions.

All these schools accept less than half of the transfer applicants going to them. Do you have a safety school? If not, you need to apply for one.

I’m just a little confused…how will you have an AA w/ less than 60 credits?

It is the job of your cc’s advisors to help you with a transfer to Michigan. UM and MI cc’s have articulation agreements. Please make an appointment to talk to an academic advisor at your school. This person should also be able to help you with any other transfers you are interested in. The cc’s expect you to continue on for a 4 year degree (at least, that is their goal in many cases). They are set up to help you. Use their services. They can tell you if you need certain classes & they can help you put together your info for an app. Good luck to you.
