and it wasn’t because it was “too hard” (well, maybe except for Physics) but I was insolent and over-endulging in the college life. Over the summer I’ve been contemplating my values and I really want to clean up my act. I would love to go to UT-Austin or a school in California (Berkeley and UCLA to be specific) though I know my chances are slim.
Summer school starts on 6/10 in four days and there’s still time to register…

High school GPA (unweighted): 3.57/4.00
ACT Score: 30/36
AP English Comp: 3/5
AP Psychology: 4/5
AP Environmental Sci: 4/5

I have a cumulative total of 45 credits (34 earned + 11 AP credits).

What I’m asking is what can I do to transfer to a better school? Retake some classes? Do something amazing that’ll make me stand out? Any advice would help, thanks for reading.

It can be very difficult to transfer to an OOS public school, particularly to the UCs, as they have agreements for accepting in state CC students. I don’t know the details or percentages, but you could ask on the UC Transfer subforum and someone there would likely know.

In addition to admissions, the cost of attending the UCs as an OOS student is currently about 50k/yr and with the fiscal problems CA is having, don’t expect any FA, not matter what your EFC is.

Grades are the primary thing that colleges are going to consider, take a look at the sticky thread, Transfer Admissions 101 for other information.

Thanks a lot entomom :)

UM TC is a great school – instead of looking for grass to be greener on some other campus, why not really just make it work at UM? Retake a few of the classes to rehabilitate your GPA a bit and just move on with the rest. Pursue your degree and career path without all this fuss about transferring.

You can pretty much write-off the idea of OOS transfer to the California UC system - even after you retake some classes and get your GPA up, there is not likely a spot for you as a OOS - spots are limited and will go to transfers with a much more straight forward transcript and more competitive GPA.

Good luck – and definitely take another look around at the UM!

This should give you some hope:
I had 2.2 my first semester fr yr and 2.95 after the second. I applied for transfer to Vandy during my sophomore yr with a 3.2ish at the time I applied and got in from a tier 4 (much less known that UMTC).
I did have amazing ec’s recs and essays, but still had a subpar gpa.
I would suggest you retake those courses bringing down your gpa over the summer and giving it a shot. Good luck.

Thanks guys
I’m going to retake two classes this summer which should raise my GPA up to a 2.9, and just keep on keepin’ on I guess haha.
