Transfer applicant: can I write a letter?

I’m applying as a transfer student to Wesleyan from a peer institution. Wesleyan is definitely my top choice for a transfer and although I’ve demonstrated interest in all the appropriate ways – tour, interview, etc. – I want to make sure admissions is aware of exactly how seriously I am thinking about Wesleyan, as I think with a school like this, that makes a difference.

Would it be okay to write an letter to admissions to include in my file explaining that Wesleyan is my top choice and I would definitely attend if admitted? I know that’s the kind of letter everyone usually sends after being waitlisted, but I was wondering if it would be appropriate to kind of…preempt the waitlist, so to speak?

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with writing an additional letter! If you are going to send it, I would certainly contact the Office of Admissions to ensure they will review it with your transfer application. I have been sending additional, unrequired materials to their admissions email, and I was informed it would be considered with the rest of my application.

I did this as a transfer and I think it helped quite a bit. Just make sure what you’re submitting is of the highest quality.

I agree…Nothing wrong with providing more insight into who you are and why you want to attend the school. My advice would be to keep it concise so that an admissions officer is willing to read it. Also, focus on two main points: how you believe you will benefit from attending Wesleyan and how you will add value to the school/student body. You want to clearly present your value proposition as a student, not simply your passion for the school. This will help to set you apart. Good luck!
