Transfer: CC vs Public University

UC Berkeley was my dream school but unfortunately I was waitlisted then denied admission for the Fall term so am instead attending the honors college at Arizona State (Barrett). It is still my ultimate goal to be able to transfer after my freshman year so I would like to gather as much information as possible to help prepare myself for reapplying.

I saw the [transfer admit rate for 2012](http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/campuses/berkeley/transfer-profile/) was 24.2%, but it was noted that 93.9% came from California community colleges. I was wondering if applying as a transfer student from ASU honors will help or hurt my chances and what I can do this year (besides getting good grades) to give myself the best possible chance.

Thanks!

Well, your first problem is that Berkeley only takes Junior transfers, so you’ll have to wait a bit before you’ll have a chance.

In terms of what to do, keep your GPA up, be interesting (good ECs, etc), and complete the pre-reqs for your major. To see what your major is expected to have completed, check assist.org… you’ll have to guess at articulations, but it’ll give you an idea of what to take.

And yes, Berkeley prioritizes California CC students… doesn’t mean transferring from OoS/4 year is impossible though.

Yes, Berkeley wants transfers to be junior level, ready to declare their majors and do upper division work.

Try to complete the lower division prerequisites for your intended major before transfer.

But remember, Arizona State is not a bad school, despite the low minimum admission standard. Arizona State does have top students who will eventually go on to top PhD programs in their majors. If you are aiming high, you want to look for such a peer group (the honors college there seems to exist to make it easier to do that). So don’t be too disappointed going to Arizona State.
