TRANSFER - Chance me for best match schools? (unique applicant, autism?)

Here is my projected application:

College cumulative GPA: 3.8 (I’m considering joining the honors society, but I am still not sure.)
ACT: 29

High school GPA: 3.3

White female, 19 years old, from north Texas. Will be majoring in Philosophy, and minoring in some area I haven’t chosen. Maybe physics.

COLLEGE ECs:

  • research alongside linguistics instructor to study the relationship between language in it’s denotative and connotative facets, in which we can study how to improve our communication of language, and also innovate new ways of writing fiction in a postmodern context.
  • 2 semesters of philosophy club, 1 semester of writing club in which I introduced literary criticism as a means to evaluate their works and thus opening broader discussion on the origins of their writing (why did I write this?)
  • several brief research papers on neoliberal politics and government, all of which were evaluated very highly
  • Continued abstract expressionist paintings and writing avant-garde stories and poetry from a background of lit criticism research and analysis.

I spent a substantial and balanced amount of hours on all of these.

Professor recs are very, very good, highlight my participation in the classroom as a source of discussion. Not afraid to take a controversial stance, and write maturely and controlled.

Essay is spot-on, creative. English instructor evaluated it and said it’s Ivy material.

I have plenty of abstract expressionist art supplements and avant garde writings which I can submit as a portfolio.

I’m a bit of a unique applicant… I started school when I was four years old (they’d tested me for some sort of intelligence, and thought I should start early? That’s what my parents told me at least), I also am on the autism spectrum, MIGHT explain my lower GPA. I wasn’t at all focused and in tune with myself, and still had problems with basics like hygiene (no, I was not neglected, just very unaware of my self) and a lot of verbalization. Nothing except poetry and reading books really crossed my mind… So I didn’t care about school, alongside the bullying. Plus my social issues expatriated me very much from my peers, so I didn’t want to join ECs, I figured people just would not want me there. I didn’t get any help because autism/aspergers is quite tough to see in females unless they’re completely nonverbal (I was verbal, just not enough, was not articulating very much and extremely monotone to where people had trouble understanding me). How would I explain all of this to the AdComs?

But I am doing A LOT better after receiving a diagnosis and then going on medication + therapy. I am a lot more in tune with myself and am doing great work within my community college, and can safely say my autism is not a huge impediment in my life as it used to be. Of course I still have trouble and could not work at a job well, but I am doing well academically. I am not involved THAT much in the clubs, but I would say I’m extremely intellectually involved in the community.

I’m specifically looking for a humanistic and liberal academic curriculum, good internship opportunities, and generous aid. I would love to get into Wesleyan, Harvard, or Brown. I feel like the name and prestige will get people to listen to me, as I plan on doing a lot of activism and maybe publishing. People usually shrug me off as stupid because I dont absorb information in the way others do, and can miss really REALLY obvious things. Would this be a plus for me in my application, to share this with the Adcoms?

I should also add I am transferring from a community college.

bump

You should shoot for a Texas 4 year state school that will accept your credits.

@ClarinetDad16
I have been looking into UT Austin and will be applying there. it is a fantastic school. But I do also want to see if there were any other schools I could have a chance at. I don’t think I would fit in at A&M at all, UNT will be a safety… the other Texas schools I’ve heard just don’t have very rigorous academics. I get bored very fast with boring coursework. However, I do want to go to a prestigious institution for the reasons I’ve listed, and they also tend to teach in a holistic, liberal arts way, and watching lectures from these places I’ve learned a lot more than I thought I would, so I feel these would be the best matches for me academically. I’m also looking to get my masters in philosophy, and possibly a PhD. That’s the plan/dream.

Everyone wants to go to prestigious institutions. There’s nothing unique about you in that regard, and these institutions don’t give a hoot that it’s your “dream” - they have thousands of kids with the same dream knocking at their doors.

How is your socialization these days? How would you come across in an interview?

@Pizzagirl
It’s come along okay. I’m still really weird and goofy, but fully verbal. I dont know how I would come across in an interview. it depends on how the interviewer interprets me. I’m not a rude person, so.

But I do think I have a lot of unique viewpoints to share, and how I view the world with the hardships I’ve dealt with, and also the things I’ve read and how I imagine a future.

Get a Texas degree and then the door to grad school is open to hou

@ClarinetDad16 I’m just afraid something might come up, and I wont go or wont be able to.

Even more reason to ensure your CC credits count, you graduate with a bachelors. Most of the work you have done won’t count at the schools you dream of. The first prize is the degree, and then grad school or a career to follow. Texas is your clearest, least expensive, fastest path.
