Transfer chances

Hi. I want to transfer to Purdue, UT Austin, TAMU or University of Maryland. Low income. US Citizen -not international!- but i am not a resident of any state because I lived overseas all my life due to my father’s occupation. GPA 3.43 in METU Electrical Engineering,3.5 in Hacettepe Medical School. Transferred from METU to Hacettepe. Both are top schools-harvard and MIT of Turkey, but not meeting my expectations. Stats
800 physics,chemistry,math 2c
790 Math 1c 780 Biology M
760 Math 600 verbal in SAT 1
5 in Calculus AB,Chemistry, Biology-AP tests
4 in Calculus BC(AB Subscore),3 Calculus BC –>AP Scholar
Ranked 3/265 from Top turkish public high school
ranked 1st/40000 in National University Entrance Exam
Recommendations from head of Medical Biology department and Histology department.

I took 42 credits at METU Electrical Engineering. I want to transfer back to Electrical engineering but in States, in one of the schools I listed.
And by the way, I work, and am a certified application developer and a math teacher at a course. I know C,C++,Java,PIC C,JSP,ASP.NET,T-SQL. I use MSVS 2005 and MS SQL 2005.
And by the way Im 19.graduated from high school in 3 years.-even took analytical geometry:)

So what are my chances?
First choice: Purdue.
Reminder: I need 100% scholarship or my family wont send me, how can I manage that? Can any of you recommend me grants or scholarships?

Thanks in advance.
Toodles
Bye:)

your stats are really strong. you’ll definitely be admitted to maryland, but i’m not familiar with any of the other schools’ transfer admission rates. as far as scholarships go, i completely understand where you’re coming from… but again, i’m not familiar with the finaid policies of the schools you’ve mentioned.

if you don’t mind answering a few questions, i might be able to recommend some additional aid you could seek out.

  1. when are/were the priority filing dates for finaid and when did you get your complete your file? if you haven’t finished applying for aid, do so asap!
2a. do any/all of the schools pledge to meet 100% of financial need?
2b. if it’s not too personal, was your efc under or around 1000? or was it 3000+?
  2. have you called the financial aid office to explain your situation? if you get in touch with someone that’s responsible for distributing grant/scholarship money and explain your situation, they’re more likely to keep you in mind when the time comes to put together packages… and more likely to give you as much money as they can spare.
  3. have you looked at the scholarships offered through the engineering department? deadlines for next semester’s departmental scholarships should be coming up, if they haven’t already passed.

I would rate you as very very strong for Purdue. But I don’t know anything about your current schools - taking your own description of them, I think you are among the strongest candidates for Purdue.

What I don’t know about is full rides - merit $$ is very, very rare for transfers. I don’t know Purdue’s need-based aid policies.

I don’t know the other schools as well, but I still rate your chances very high. However, no clue re financial packages.

Dear Friend,
I thank you for your encouragement and would like you to know that I sent in my scores today. Purdue is really my clear first choice school although TAMU and UT Austin are also desirable. All of them are much better than the eningeering schools here.

I already know that because I am not a in state citizen, I wont get a good financial aid package. I was wondering if you know any foundations, companies who might be interested in assisting me?
20.000$ a year is all I need. Paris Hilton spends that in a flash:)
Funny isnt it how some people turn out lucky.
Whatever, if you want to know I am :
Catholic
Son of a Vietnam veteran-28 years
And basically in need of help.

Anything would be great. First If i gain admission of course:)

And no, I didnt file anything yet. I am doing it ASAP as you recommended. Harvard said 1st March (I applied there but I wont make it, I know, thats what I didnt bother writing it). So I figured that it might the same for all schools. I am looking into it. Thanks for the heads up.

Take care. All of you. And please help me. If I could find time from medical school I would be searching 24/7 :frowning: I know I will never see you, but I will always appreciate any Ideas on your behalf.

God Bless.

And by the way, my GPA turned out to be 3.25 in medical school (just found out today  ) But Im in top 15% (according to the college official-dean-) in the class, and the highest GPA is 3.75 so imagine:) Know what I mean when I say competition:) ??

Info: We dont have curve system. In METU a 77 grade is A in our school is a B-.
Cut off grading system. So its very tough. They will take it into account right? (I prepared an explanation signed by the college official for harvard, will do for purdue too)

We dont actually have a certain GPA system, and we dont graduate with a GPA so that 3.35 is just a number to estimate. You must realize that only 1-2 or none of the people get A1 in tests-4.0 and very few get A2-3.5 We have 4 exams a year. So my first exam was B1-77 second exam was A2-87. I was 23rd/150 in the first test, 7th/150 in the second. The kids in our school are in the top 500 of 1.8 million selected with the Turkish National University Entrance Exam. I will try to explain this in a way to the schools, kindly, (in fact if you can send me paragraph for this, I would really appreciate it). Take care all of you, just wanted to share.

bump bump bump

Look up Federal Pell Grants. You may qualify for something similar to a State Pell Grant as well through whatever program it is you are living abroad through (I’m guessing military base). Are loans an option? There are also Federal Student Loans in which the federal government will pay the interest while you are in school. A similar program is offered called Student PLUS Loan.
Look into these first and see if you apply, typically these options in some sort of combination will cover the entire cost of need-based students.
