Transfer/circumstances

Hey I’m going to be a transfer student. I went to Wesleyan University for a year but because of a lot (and I mean a lot) of unfortunate events I had a horrible first year… and ended up broke and essentially between homes. I had to take a year off and I retook the SAT’s and did really well but my gpa from my freshman year is abysmal. I graduated at the top of my class in High school and I have been working my butt off to save money for school and to live. Most schools (the ones I’m looking at BC, williams etc.) want recommendations from college professors and a minimum gpa of 3.5 neither of which I have/can get. Is there anything I can do?

I would call a couple admissions departments, explain you really want to transfer there, explain your situation and ask them what you can do to make a transfer possible. They may suggest returning to Wes or going to a CC to improve your college grades (and get college recs).

Thanks,
BC said I should go to UML and get recs from there but I’ve already had to take a year out of school and I know UML is not going to be as intellectually stimulating for me. I’ve worked really hard to get my life together. I just wish there was a way to show schools that. I guess I’ll just go to UML for a semester and then transfer. I’ll just have to get in good with a well known professor there :). Got to stay positive. Thanks jerz

I would write an essay about your experience, be honest and show how you’ve overcome all of the unfortunate events. Then, apply to some good schools that are not so competitive, but still intellectually challenging (e.g., Earlham is a great school). Good luck.
