I am applying as a transfer student 2012-2013. I know getting accepted is the main thing but family’s economic condition has to considered before applying. I used cost calculator to determine the actual cost of attending the college, but the cost calculator I used was most possibly for a freshman. On the basis of need, the cost calculator showed University grant as $47,000 and the Odyssey scholarship as $3,500 among others. To sum it up, I have two questions:
1)Will the transfer students be applicable for the University grant of $47,000?
2)I searched everywhere but couldn’t find cost calculator for the transfer student, I doubt is there any?

I Believe transfers are given financial aid packages comparable with freshmen. That calculator should be reasonably accurate.

Thank you for sharing your thought, snipersas. According to UChicago financial aid office, only Chicago public high school students and first year students are eligible for Chicago Public Schools (CPS) Scholarship and Merit Scholarship respectively. I am neither of them; I am a permanent resident with foreign high school degree and currently sophomore at a college in US. My concern here is if the CPS scholarship and other merit scholarships sums up to make the University grant of $47K, or if the University grant of $47K is independent of other scholarships and is solely need-based for all US citizens and permanent residents.

University grant is independent of CPS and merit scholarships. University grant translates into “the financial aid your family qualifies for.” Odyssey scholarship is similar, but for people with family incomes of less than $90k. If you get in, you’ll likely get around the amount that you calculated, if you did it correctly and your parents don’t have a lot of huge assets (>$500k houses, etc). Transfer students basically get the same aid packages as first years, so your #1 focus should be on getting in.

Thank you, phuriku. Your statements gave me a peace of mind for now.
