Transfer for mechanical engineering

I am a rising sophomore at a school which does not have an engineering program. I am wondering which schools are best to transfer students, and which are available to transfer to in the spring of 2018. Thanks!

Also i am in Texas, but am looking for something other than A and M and UT. Also looking for schools that give out a fair amount of aid, which is why private OOS schools might be a good fit. As i attend a private OOS school now and am receiving aid

What are you college grades like - that will be a big part of your ability to transfer. Any other preferences like geographic, size, etc.

How much can you and your family contribute and are you willing/ able to go a total of 5 years or more for ME?

Schools typically give less aid for transfers than freshman. That could be an issue

One issue in transferring is that you probably don’t have the 1st year prerequisites needed to take engineering classes-like chem, physics, calculus specifically for engineering students. . A lot of schools want those classes done before take you into engineering school. If your school doesn’t have an engineering program you probably can’t get those classes there. So you’d need to be admitted to a school that would allow you to take those 1st, then admit you to engineering. A bit of a risk so make sure you understand that process.

Not every school does spring admits so check on that.

What are your grades?

It can be very difficult to get much/enough aid as a transfer student even at a private. The NPCs won’t be correct for transfer students.

How much will your family pay each year?

Do not cut ties with your current school until you see and understand the aid pkg at any new school. Continue to register for classes for following semesters/years until you know if a new school is affordable w/o a bunch of loans.

If you can’t find an affordable school, then perhaps continue at your current school as possibly an Applied Math major, Physics major, Comp Sci major and then get an eng’g grad degree. That said, many math and physics majors work as engineers w/o an eng’g degree. If you like both math and physics, then perhaps a double major or major in one, and minor in the other.
