Let’s suppose for a moment that something goes awry while in a Canadian MSc program (fully funded or else I wouldn’t bother applying in the first place), like, say, my supervisor’s research grants get axed. Or that I no longer fit my supervisor and that we don’t get along very well anymore because my supervisor made a drastic change in research interests (after fitting my supervisor for a time). I know I’d probably anger my supervisor if I wanted to transfer for any reason other than a loss of research grants.

I understand that I will have to take the GRE before I can finalize a transfer application to an American PhD program; if I ever was to apply to graduate school in the US, I was encouraged by faculty, both at Tufts and at my undergraduate school, to do so at the PhD level even if I’m transferring from a MSc program (my parents didn’t let me use the money they let me use for college on the GRE, thus I couldn’t apply to grad school in the US straight out of undergrad).

But do you have any advice for transferring in one such situation?
